Data direct access folder naming

by frank.fell_007 » Thu Apr 10, 2025 11:03 am America/New_York

My tool to automatically download data from https://oceandata.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov/directdataaccess/Level-2/SNPP-VIIRS/2025/ recently crashed when I invoked it again after a few weeks of inactivity.

Analyzing the issue, I found that the program was looking for folder:
.../SNPP-VIIRS/2025/060/
which is not (no longer?) available. Instead, the requested folder is now called:
.../SNPP-VIIRS/2025/01-Mar-2025/

I.e., while previously using the day of year as the name of the hierarchically lowest folder, it is now a date string of format "DD-MMM-YYYY".

Adapting the program should not be too much of a hassle - I am just curious whether the change in folder naming has been motivated and explained somewhere? (I probably missed it...)

Personally, I preferred the DOY approach - for example, the year appears redundant in the new naming scheme (.../2025/01-Mar-2025/...).

Otherwise: always amazed by your fantastic service to the ocean science community!!!

Best,
F

I'm not sure if we announced this change. I'm almost sure it was due to a database migration which affected our data access points. Apologies for any confusion due to the change!
