Harmonized Landsat Sentinel-2 (HLS) Version 2.0

by LP DAAC-EDL - kyrad » Tue May 27, 2025 9:40 am America/New_York

The LP DAAC offers Harmonized Landsat Sentinel-2 (HLS) Version 2 products, which provide consistent surface reflectance (SR) and top of atmosphere (TOA) brightness data from the Operational Land Imager (OLI) aboard the joint NASA/USGS Landsat 8 satellite and the Multi-Spectral Instrument (MSI) aboard the ESA (European Space Agency) Sentinel-2A and Sentinel-2B satellites. The combined measurement enables global observations of the land every 2–3 days at 30 meter (m) spatial resolution.

The full archive of these data are available through through NASA's Earthdata Search (https://search.earthdata.nasa.gov/search?q=hls) and AppEEARS: (https://lpdaac.usgs.gov/tools/appeears/)

It should be noted that challenges in the acquisition of source input data for the HLSS30 data product have resulted in data gaps and increased latency in delivery of this data product. Work toward a solution is ongoing, but there is currently not a date for when this issue is expected to be resolved.

Improvements to the HLS v2 include:
  • Additional data layers consisting of solar and viewing azimuth and zenith angle bands.
  • Aerosol Quality Assurance bits from the USGS Land Surface Reflectance Code (LaSRC) model output added into the Fmask data layer.
  • LaSRC version 3.1.0 is used to atmospherically correct the input Sentinel data.
A citation containing the Digital Object Identifier (DOI) for each dataset is provided below.

I am a bit confused, hasn't HLS 2.0 been available for some time now and is already fully back-processed?

Hi @mitchbon apologies for the confusion. The HLS Version 2 data currently available are the same as what was previously released. We are working on creating some posts on the forum that were previously not added here to help prepare for our move to the https://www.earthdata.nasa.gov/centers/lp-daac. We will make sure that is clearer in the future. Thanks -- Danielle
