ORNL DAAC Request for New GCMD Instrument: Air-LUSI

by ORNL - yaxingwei » Tue Sep 09, 2025 4:02 pm America/New_York

Hi,

The ORNL DAAC needs help to add a new GCMD instrument keyword.

Short name: Air-LUSI
Long name: Airborne Lunar Spectral Irradiance

Hierarchical Path: Instruments > Solar/Space Observing Instruments > Visible/Infrared Instruments > Air-LUSI

Description: The Airborne Lunar Spectral Irradiance (Air-LUSI) is a spectrometer designed to measure lunar spectral irradiance at the top of the atmosphere on NASA ER-2 aircraft. It was developed through a partnership with NASA and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in collaboration with the University of Maryland Baltimore County, the University of Guelph, and the U.S. Geological Survey to improve satellite accuracy through lunar observations. It consists of three components: an IRradiance Instrument Subsystem (IRIS) to measure lunar irradiance, an Autonomous Robotic Telescope Mount Instrument Subsystem (ARTEMIS) to maintain alignment with the moon, and a HIgh-altitude ER-2 Adaption (HERA) subsystem to protect the instrument from extreme cold and low-pressure environments. Air-LUSI operates across the Visible and Near Infrared (VNIR) spectral region (350-1050 nm) with a spectral resolution of 3.7 nm. It provides highly accurate (<1%) measurements of lunar irradiance that are traceable to the International Systems of Units (SI). These measurements help improve uncertainty in lunar irradiance in the exo-atmosphere to establish a lunar calibration model based on the lunar phase and geometry to calibrate satellite observations.

@ORNL - yaxingwei We have a project keyword with the same name. Do you still want it as a separate Instrument keyword?

Thanks, @GCMD - tstevens ,

Yes, we do need a separate instrument keyword with the same name to properly tag the metadata records to support filtering/search based on instrument as well.

Best,
Yaxing
