* il basso livello di istruzione (OR, 1.56; 95% CI, 1,32-1,84) e l'età avanzata (OR, 1.73; 95% CI, 1,67-1,80) erano indipendentemente associati ad un aumentato rischio di sindrome metabolica nel quinquennio 2007-2012.<ref name="1988-2012survey"/>

Da riportare, per completezza, un interessante e recente studio polacco, dove è stato osservato un aumento nella frequenza di insorgenza dei fattori di rischio della sindrome metabolica tra soggetti con ''BMI'' al limite superiore del range di normalità (18.5–24.9 kg/m2 ) . Al fine di individuare soggetti "metabolicamente obesi", ma con peso normale, fu necessario controllare la circonferenza della vita (≥ 94 cm nei maschi; ≥ 80 cm nelle femmine), quando il BMI superava il 22,5 nelle femmine e il 23,8 nei maschi, poiché valori al di fuori della norma erano indicazione a promuovere ulteriori accertamenti per ricercare altri fattori di rischio.<ref name="pmid28030935">{{Cita pubblicazione | cognome = Suliga | nome = E. | coautori = D. L'obesità è sicuramente il fattore esogeno più importante, ma la sedentarietà e una dieta ricca di grassi e zuccheri semplici, contribuiscono apeggiorare il quadro clinico.
