As access time of all the widespread [[random-access memory|RAM]] types (e.g. [[DDR SDRAM]], [[GDDR SDRAM]], [[XDR DRAM]], etc.) is still relatively high, engineers came up with the idea to hide the latency that inevitably comes with each memory access.
