Secondo il censimento del 2023, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa conta oltre 40 milioni di abitanti. La maggioranza assoluta appartiene al gruppo etnico [[pashtun]] (o pakhtun), che costituisce circa i due terzi della popolazione. I pashtun sono distribuiti soprattutto lungo le zone centrali, meridionali e nelle aree tribali della provincia, e seguono storicamente il codice del ''[[Pashtunwali]]''. Oltre ai pashtun, in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa vivono altre etnie e comunità: gli [[Lingua hindko|Hindko-speakers]], concentrati specialmente nella zona di Hazara e in parte di Peshawar; i Chitrali, che parlano la [[Lingua khowar|lingua Khowar]] e abitano la valle di Chitral, all'estremo nord della provincia; i gruppi Kohistani, Torwali, [[Gurjar|Gujjar]], [[Kalash]] e altri gruppi minori, presenti soprattutto nelle vallate di montagna. La città principale e capoluogo è [[Peshawar]], con una popolazione che supera i due milioni di abitanti, seguita da [[Mardan]], [[Mingora]] (Swat), [[Kohat]], [[Abbottabad]], [[Bannu]] e [[Dera Ismail Khan]].
