Seed contamination is the mixing of seeds used for agriculture with other seeds which are not desirable or soil (which may carry seeds). An example would be mixing corn seed with weed seed. These contaminant seeds can be either common weeds or other crop seeds.

In genetic engineering, seed contamination may refer to unwanted genes found in a seed, or pieces of DNA from other genetically engineered seeds.

Contamination in Agriculture

Contamination (in agriculture) most often occurs when seeds which will be sold to be planted are gathered. In this process, weed seeds may be caught with the product. Most larger seeds are found and removed, but sometimes smaller seeds may continue with the desirable seeds. When planted, the hidden weeds compete for space, water, and nutrients, which creates an annoying problem for farmers. If the weed is not native to the area and introduced by the seed, it could potentially become very invasive and harmful to other plants.

Almost the same process can occur with flower seeds. When the seeds are gathered, weeds are also gathered. Since flower seeds are often sold throughout the world, there is a greater danger that a wild plant could be introduced to an area.

Contamination in Genetic Engineering

Contamination in this area is most likely caused by other genetically engineered seeds cross pollinating with unchanged seeds. The new seeds that are produced will have significantly altered DNA than the parent seed. This mutation could potentially then be passed down for generations. It is possible that the alterations could affect plant growth and development.

Prevention

Preventing seed contamination in agriculture is fairly hard, almost impossible. Better machines constantly help to reduce the number of foreign seeds gathered.

Preventing seed contamination in genetic engineering is simply a matter of seperating "pure" seeds from contaminated ones. This will keep a supply of unaltered seeds for future use. If they are allowed to cross pollinate, it is possible that the altered traits will be passed down.

Government agencies, especially within the United States, are setting up programs to stop seed contamination from genetic engineering. The Gone to Seedreport lays out a plan to:

  1. Conduct a study to determine the effects, causes, and extent of seed contamination
  2. Change current seed regulations to prevent contamination
  3. Create a "bank" of unaltered seeds

Fleet problem was the term by the U.S. Navy to describe each of twenty one large-scale navel exercises conducted between 1923 and 1940. They are labeled with roman numerals, as in Fleet Problem I through Fleet Problem XXI. A twenty-second Fleet Problem exercise scheduled for 1941 was canceled because of the Second World War.

The fleet problems were usually once a year exercises in which U.S. naval forces would engage in mock battles. One or more of the forces would play the part of a European or Asian navy. They were the culmination of the Navy's annual training maneuvers.

In 1973 the partnership with remaining living brother Edouard was dissolved.

Bourque buildings were sold and Quebec City companies were sold to the Province of Quebec.

In 1980 Pierre Bourque founded Bourque Pierre FILS Ltée

The new Company purchased a 125-acre quarry from Ciment Lafarge Limitée in the heart of Hull, Quebec

People claimed Bourque had taken leave of his senses, that the deep stone quarry was only good for garbage disposal.

Bourque maintains that history will uphold his vision that this site will become the most prestigious piece of land in the Outaouais.

In1995 Casino du Lac Leamy opened its doors. and year later, a 250-room Hilton Hotel and Conference Centre was built - an investment of $500,000,000 (Five Hundred million Dollars.)

Since 2000 Bourque has been waging a legal battle with mortgage holder, Sun Life, et al, who want to take the possession of the St. Laurent Building.

Bourque is suing Sun Life for $11,000,000 (Eleven Million Dollars) in damages. Since 1991, Sun Life has never missed one month's rent from the Government of Canada.
The Rent is based on Government of Canada bond rates. Quebec Superior Court judge Marcelin called Sun Life as "piggish" for wanting to charge Bourque with 12% interest, 4.5% additional percentage points in interest over the 7 3/4 % going rate and the one set by the court.

Sun accepted the court set 7 3/4 %.

Pierre Bourque is asking the Quebec Superior court to fast track his lawsuit .

In 2005, Pierre Bourque became a consultant to IMMOBILIARE Developments Ltd, one of his son Philippe`s companies.

The company is offering to build 1.3 million square feet of office space for the Government of Canada on land adjoining the Louis St. Laurent site.
The $200,000,000 (Two Hundred Million Dollar) complex could accommodate 5,000 federal employees.

SALAMAT ALI DABIR (1803-1875)

The name of Salamat Ali Dabir is bracketed with that of Babar Ali Anees in any mention of Urdu poetry, more specifically, in the context of the Marsia. The marsia, strictly speaking, is an elegiac poem written to commemorate the martyrdom and valour of Hazrat Imam Hussain and his comrades of the Karbala fame. In its form the marsia generally consists of six-line units, with a rhyming quatrain, and a couplet on a different rhyme. This form found a specially congenial soil in Lucknow, chiefly because it was the centre of Shia Muslim community, which regarded it an act of piety and religious duty to eulogise and bemoan the martyrs of the battle of Karbala. Both Dabir and Anees, who were almost exact contemporaries, were the masters of this genre, and both expended their poetic talent and devotional fervour in refining the form and quality of the marsia. Both of them were good friend, respecting each other's poetic ability, yet they were strong poetic rivals chiefly because of the difference in their individual styles of writing and their treatment of this art form. While Dabir tried to impress his audience with the force and flourish of his style, embellished with Persian words and phrases, and a rich wealth of innovative metaphors and imagery, made to look all the more ponderous with occasional scriptural quotation and allusion, Anees followed a simple, natural style, artistic and adequate to his needs, but not affected. Both of them had their bands of admirers who called themselves "dabirias" and "aneesias", depending upon their allegiance to Dabir or Anees. This poetic rivalry between two distinguished masters of the same genre tended to improve the quality not only of the marsia, but also of Urdu poetry in general, which acquired a new dimension of realistic writing and natural description.

Dabir was born in Delhi in 1803, a year before the birth of Anees. Right in his childhood Dabir's parents moved to Lucknow which was to become the poet's permanent home . unlike Aness, who came from a family of reputed poets, Dabir had to depend upon his own inner instincts and abilities, which, however, he developed with utmost diligence and care, under the guidance of his poetic mentor, Mir Muzaffar Ali Zameer. Dabir soon acquired a high position in the field of learning and literature, and as a poet of the marsia, to which form he gave all his energy and attention, and in which form he easily surpassed even his master, Zameer. He not only wrote and read his marsias, but also recited them in public in an impressive, musical way. Dabir did not write ghazals, though he was, like Anees, a specialist of the rubai, a four-lines stanza in the special "rajaz" metre, rhyming aaba. Dabir died in 1875 on Muharram, a day traditionally associated with the martyrdom of Iman Hussain, when the bands of the "faithfuls" indulge in heart-rending marsia khwaani.

The excerpt chosen for this book describes how tremulously yet tactfully, Hazrat Imam Hussian approaches the enemy camp with a request for water for his infant son, Asghar, half-dead with thirst. The last little detail which shows the infant moving his tongue on his parched lips is a master-stroke of the poet, proving his ability both as a poet and a psychologist.

Josef "Sepp" Allerberger is recognized as the second leading German sniper of WW II with a total number of recognized kills at 257. Josef served all of his time, 1943-1945, on the Eastern Front fighting the Russians. In one engagement alone he killed 58 Russians which prompted his recognition by higher and the eventual award of the Knight's Cross. Due to the German Army's strict accountability system he was never given full credit for his total number of kills. His total number of kills was most likely double of what is recognized.

The Top 10

10 "We're bigger than Jesus" (1966) John Lennon had made the observation to an English journalist when asked about the future of Christianity. Although it was pretty much a statement of fact, religious leaders interpreted the remark as blasphemy, and ordered the burning of Beatles records around the country. 9 Sinead rips into pope (1991) Sinead O'Connor had already started a storm of controversy by refusing to have the national anthem played before one of her concerts. When she tore up a picture of the pope on Saturday Night Live to protest the Catholic church's stance on abortion, the former "Nothing Compares 2 U" chart-topper became a pariah. 8 Woodstock '99 (1999) While the first festival was three days of peace, love, and music, this edition had Limp Bizkit. Never ones to shy away from a little mudslinging, they urged the audience to go nuts during the raucous anthem "Break Stuff." They complied. Then the Red Hot Chili Peppers played "Fire." It took over a month to clean up the wreckage. 7 Milli Vanilli can't sing (1990) They had been dismissed as pretty faces, but that didn't prevent single after single from climbing the charts. Their reign came to a messy end when their producer revealed that other people had done the singing, and Milli Vanilli were forced to return their Grammy Awards. 6 Fans killed at Who show (1979) Keith Moon had died, but the Who vowed to carry on with the addition of Kenny Jones. However, their American tour was marred by tragedy when a stampede to claim unreserved seats at Cincinnati's Riverfront Coliseum left 11 concertgoers fatally trampled. 5 Marvin Gaye is murdered (1984) Marvin Gaye had always wavered between the claims of his faith and his body's appetite for both sex and narcotics. After a period in the wilderness, he had made a decisive comeback with "Sexual Healing." But an argument with his father ended in his being shot dead. 4 Kurt Cobain commits suicide (1994) The Nirvana frontman seemed like a star with lots still left to say, but he felt suffocated by the band's fame and believed his best days were behind him. After a number of drug overdoses and other warning signs, he brought his life to a sudden end with the tug of a shotgun's trigger. Shocked fans were left to pick up the pieces. 3 Murder at Altamont (1969) The Rolling Stones meant for their free festival outside San Francisco to be the ultimate expression of '60s harmony. However, a mix of bad organization and Hell's Angels brought Mick Jagger's worst-ever show to a violent end. 2 MJ accused of sexual abuse (1993) For years Michael Jackson's fondness for the company of tykes like Macaulay Culkin and Emmanuel Lewis seemed to be an eccentricity befitting the world's biggest pop star. However, all it took was the accusations of an angry parent and an out-of-court settlement to taint Jackson's reputation. 1 John Lennon is murdered (1980) Rather like hearing the Space Shuttle had just exploded or that Pearl Harbor had been bombed, this was just one of those stories that seemed too outlandish to believe. Who would want to kill John Lennon, the leader of the Beatles, as he prepared to emerge from bread-baking retirement?
