Reusing references: Can we look over your shoulder?
modificaApologies for writing in English.
The Technical Wishes team at Wikimedia Deutschland is planning to make reusing references easier. For our research, we are looking for wiki contributors willing to show us how they are interacting with references.
- The format will be a 1-hour video call, where you would share your screen. More information here.
- Interviews can be conducted in English, German or Dutch.
- Compensation is available.
- Sessions will be held in January and February.
- Sign up here if you are interested.
- Please note that we probably won’t be able to have sessions with everyone who is interested. Our UX researcher will try to create a good balance of wiki contributors, e.g. in terms of wiki experience, tech experience, editing preferences, gender, disability and more. If you’re a fit, she will reach out to you to schedule an appointment.
We’re looking forward to seeing you, Thereza Mengs (WMDE)
Looking for your Input: Invitation to interview on using Wikidata in other projects
modificaHello Italian Wikimedians, despite the similarity between this message and the one above, I assure you they are on separate topics! Wikimedia Deutschland has a new project team (Wikidata for Wikimedia Projects) investigating the different ways Wikidata is being used in the other Wikimedia projects and we are looking for your valuable insights that you might like to share. If you would be interested in such a discussion, we encourage you to register for an interview with us at the following link: Sign Up Here
- The format will be a 1-hour (recorded) call.
- Interviews can only be conducted in English (our apologies).
- Compensation is available. More information here.
- Interview Sessions will be held in January and February.
- Please Sign Up Here if you are interested.
If you would like to relay your feedback and thoughts without participating in a call, we have provided this Discussion/Issue page for you to record your issues. We hope to hear from you, -- Danny Benjafield (WMDE) (msg) 11:50, 10 gen 2024 (CET)
Feminism and Folklore 2024
modificaDear Wiki Community,
You are humbly invited to organize the Feminism and Folklore 2024 writing competition from February 1, 2024, to March 31, 2024 on your local Wikipedia. This year, Feminism and Folklore will focus on feminism, women's issues, and gender-focused topics for the project, with a Wiki Loves Folklore gender gap focus and a folk culture theme on Wikipedia.
You can help Wikipedia's coverage of folklore from your area by writing or improving articles about things like folk festivals, folk dances, folk music, women and queer folklore figures, folk game athletes, women in mythology, women warriors in folklore, witches and witch hunting, fairy tales, and more. Users can help create new articles, expand or translate from a generated list of suggested articles.
Organisers are requested to work on the following action items to sign up their communities for the project:
- Create a page for the contest on the local wiki.
- Set up a campaign on CampWiz tool.
- Create the local list and mention the timeline and local and international prizes.
- Request local admins for site notice.
- Link the local page and the CampWiz link on the meta project page.
This year, the Wiki Loves Folklore Tech Team has introduced two new tools to enhance support for the campaign. These tools include the Article List Generator by Topic and CampWiz. The Article List Generator by Topic enables users to identify articles on the English Wikipedia that are not present in their native language Wikipedia. Users can customize their selection criteria, and the tool will present a table showcasing the missing articles along with suggested titles. Additionally, users have the option to download the list in both CSV and wikitable formats. Notably, the CampWiz tool will be employed for the project for the first time, empowering users to effectively host the project with a jury. Both tools are now available for use in the campaign. Click here to access these tools
Learn more about the contest and prizes on our project page. Feel free to contact us on our meta talk page or by email us if you need any assistance.
We look forward to your immense coordination.
Thank you and Best wishes,
Wiki Loves Folklore is back!

A new feature for previewing references on your wiki
modificaApologies for writing in English. If you can translate this message, that would be much appreciated.
Hi. As announced some weeks ago [1] [2], Wikimedia Deutschland’s Technical Wishes team introduced Reference Previews to many wikis, including this one. This feature shows popups for references in the article text.
While this new feature is already usable on your wiki, most people here are not seeing it yet because your wiki has set a gadget as the default for previewing references. We suggest removing the default flag from this gadget on your wiki. That will mean:
- The new default for reference popups on your wiki will be Reference Previews.
- However, if you want to keep using the gadget, you can still enable it in your personal settings.
The benefit of having Reference Previews as the default is that the user experience will be consistent across wikis and with the Page Previews feature, and that the software will be easier to maintain overall.
If your wiki wants to make this change, you can remove the default flag yourself or ask the Technical Wishes team to remove it for you, ideally by February 12.

- Maggio 2024: Invito a presentare candidature e domande
Cordiali saluti,
Dariusz Jemielniak (Governance Committee Chair, Board Selection Working Group)

[3] https://foundation.wikimedia.org/wiki/Minutes:2023-08-15#Governance_Committee
[4] https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections_committee/Roles

Translation assistance
modificaHello! I am KB, an employee of Binance. I typically edit the English version of Wikipedia, and you can find my conflict of interest disclosure on my User page there. I worked with editors to create the English Richard Teng article, and am here seeking help placing a translated version. Because of my conflict of interest, I do not directly create or edit content related to Binance. I prepared a translation in my sandbox and was wondering if someone here could review, or point me to the best place to seek help.

Invitation to participate in the #WPWPCampaign 2024
modificaDear community members,
We are inviting you to participate in the Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos 2024 campaign, a global contest scheduled to run from July through August 2024:
Participants will choose among Wikipedia pages without photo images, then add a suitable file from among the many thousands of photos in the Wikimedia Commons, especially those uploaded from thematic contests (Wiki Loves Africa, Wiki Loves Earth, Wiki Loves Folklore, etc.) over the years.
In its first year (2020), 36 Wikimedia communities in 27 countries joined the campaign. Events relating to the campaign included training organized by at least 18 Wikimedia communities in 14 countries.
The campaign resulted in the addition of media files (photos, audios and videos) to more than 90,000 Wikipedia articles in 272 languages.
Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos (WPWP) offers an ideal task for recruiting and guiding new editors through the steps of adding content to existing pages. Besides individual participation, the WPWP campaign can be used by user groups and chapters to organize editing workshops and edit-a-thons.
The organizing team is looking for a contact person to coordinate WPWP participation your language Wikipedia. We’d be glad for you to sign up directly at WPWP Participating Communities page on Meta-Wiki.

Wikimedia Movement Charter ratification voting results
modifica- You can find this message translated into additional languages on Meta-wiki. Aiutaci a tradurre nella tua lingua
Hello everyone,
After carefully tallying both individual and affiliate votes, the Charter Electoral Commission is pleased to announce the final results of the Wikimedia Movement Charter voting.
As communicated by the Charter Electoral Commission, we reached the quorum for both Affiliate and individual votes by the time the vote closed on July 9, 23:59 UTC. We thank all 2,451 individuals and 129 Affiliate representatives who voted in the ratification process. Your votes and comments are invaluable for the future steps in Movement Strategy.
The final results of the Wikimedia Movement Charter ratification voting held between 25 June and 9 July 2024 are as follows:
Individual vote:
Out of 2,451 individuals who voted as of July 9 23:59 (UTC), 2,446 have been accepted as valid votes. Among these, 1,710 voted “yes”; 623 voted “no”; and 113 selected “–” (neutral). Because the neutral votes don’t count towards the total number of votes cast, 73.30% voted to approve the Charter (1710/2333), while 26.70% voted to reject the Charter (623/2333).
Affiliates vote:
Out of 129 Affiliates designated voters who voted as of July 9 23:59 (UTC), 129 votes are confirmed as valid votes. Among these, 93 voted “yes”; 18 voted “no”; and 18 selected “–” (neutral). Because the neutral votes don’t count towards the total number of votes cast, 83.78% voted to approve the Charter (93/111), while 16.22% voted to reject the Charter (18/111).
Board of Trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation:
The Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees voted not to ratify the proposed Charter during their special Board meeting on July 8, 2024. The Chair of the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees, Nataliia Tymkiv, shared the result of the vote, the resolution, meeting minutes and proposed next steps.
With this, the Wikimedia Movement Charter in its current revision is not ratified.
We thank you for your participation in this important moment in our movement’s governance.

Coming soon: A new sub-referencing feature – try it!
modificaHello. For many years, community members have requested an easy way to re-use references with different details. Now, a MediaWiki solution is coming: The new sub-referencing feature will work for wikitext and Visual Editor and will enhance the existing reference system. You can continue to use different ways of referencing, but you will probably encounter sub-references in articles written by other users. More information on the project page.
We want your feedback to make sure this feature works well for you:
- Please try the current state of development on beta wiki and let us know what you think.
- Sign up here to get updates and/or invites to participate in user research activities.
Wikimedia Deutschland’s Technical Wishes team is planning to bring this feature to Wikimedia wikis later this year. We will reach out to creators/maintainers of tools and templates related to references beforehand.
Please help us spread the message. --Johannes Richter (WMDE) (talk) 10:36, 19 August 2024 (UTC)

🐺 —super nablaZzz 13:14, 4 set 2024 (CEST)

Article translation request
modificaHello, could you please translate en:From the river to the sea into Italian? I thought it is an article about an important topic, nice to see it covered in Italian.--محمد أحمد عبد الفتاح (msg) 15:52, 3 ott 2024 (CEST)
—super nablaZzz 16:38, 3 ott 2024 (CEST)
- @Ruthven @Super nabla Could you please make a stub about the topic, or point me to a page of suggested articles here, where I can put a link for this article to be translated later? Thanks.
Allora, potresti inserire la tua richiesta in WP:Voci richieste/Asia o in WP:Voci richieste/Politica, però secondo me nessuno ti risponderebbe. Special:Export page and Wikidata QID?
modificaApologies for posting in English
Hello everyone, the Wikidata for Wikimedia projects team is investigating the benefit of adding a new <tag> for a Wikidata item QID into the XML file output from the Special:Export function.
Have you used this function before? If yes, we would like to hear from you.
- Would adding a new <tag> for a linked Wikidata item (e.g. <wikidataid>) aid you?
- What types of pages did you export? (article, template, talk etc.)
- What did you do with the exported content?
Please leave your comments or questions in your preferred language as a reply to this message, thank you. -Danny Benjafield (WMDE) (msg) 17:18, 27 nov 2024 (CET)

Seeking collaborators to correct the System/23 Datamaster article

- @Buran Biggest Fan, I believe this page lacks visibility. You might consider posting your request in dp:informatica. What actions do you think it-wikipedians should take? Should they translate content from enwiki/eswiki? Could you please elaborate on this?—super nabla¶ 11:56, 9 gen 2025 (CET)
- After some trouble in the Japanese WP, I don't think if data will be accepted anymore, but there is my shot.[1]
- This site contains detailed information about the computer. Some, from the computer manuals, other by research on the board and other owners. Basically, that place intends to gather what remains of the Datamaster and document it. So far it has helped to kill a few myths, from the rumour of the redundant memory to the correction of the frequency of the microprocessor.
- I am also writing an emulator to verify the correctness of the technical data, and so far it's been correct.
- However, I am being stuck on the policy of own research and therefore cannot do it myself. It has to be a third party that takes into consideration my sources and decide if using it. Having had the low visibility this computer had, there aren't many other references to look at, unfortunately.
- Depending on your answer I will consider posting my request in the place you mentioned.
- In any case, thank you for your time and patience.
- Buran Biggest Fan (msg) 10:00, 16 gen 2025 (CET)
- [@ Buran Biggest Fan] I believe that the website cannot be used as a direct source. However, you can still reference the same materials —such as technical reports, manuals, and datasheets— that you utilised for the website in your Wikipedia article. If you have already addressed the issue of original research (OR) in the English or Spanish Wikipedia, you could simply translate what you've written into Italian or ask somebody else to do so. I recommend posting in dp:informatica, indicating that you are the maintainer of the website, and listing the sources you used to develop it. Cheers, and enjoy your time on it-wiki, mate.—super nabla¶ 13:07, 16 gen 2025 (CET)

Feminism and Folklore 2025 starts soon
modificaAiutaci a tradurre nella tua lingua
Dear Wiki Community,
You are humbly invited to organize the Feminism and Folklore 2025 writing competition from February 1, 2025, to March 31, 2025 on your local Wikipedia.

An improved dashboard for the Content Translation tool
modificaCiao Wikipedians,
Apologies as this message is not in your language, Aiutaci a tradurre nella tua lingua.
The Language and Product Localization team has improved the Content Translation dashboard to create a consistent experience for all contributors using mobile and desktop devices. Below is a breakdown of important information about the improvement.
What are the improvements?
The improved translation dashboard allows all logged-in users of the tool to enjoy a consistent experience regardless of their type of device. With a harmonized experience, logged-in desktop users can now access the capabilities shown in the image below.
Does this improvement change the current accessibility of this tool in this Wikipedia?
The Content translation tool will still be in beta; therefore, only logged-in users who activated the tool from the beta features will continue to have access to the content translation tool. Also, if the tool is only available to a specific user group, it will remain that way.
When do we plan to implement this improvement?
We will implement it on your Wikipedia and others by 24th, March 2025.
What happens to the former dashboard after we implement the improvement?
You can still access it in the tool for some time. We will remove it from all Wikipedias by May 2025, as maintaining it will no longer be productive.
Where can I test this improvement and report any issues before it is implemented in this Wiki?
You can try the improved capabilities in the test wiki using this link: https://test.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:ContentTranslation&campaign=contributionsmenu&to=es&filter-type=automatic&filter-id=previous-edits&active-list=suggestions&from=en#/ . If you notice an issue related to the improved dashboard in the test wiki, please let us know in this thread and ping me, or report it in Phabricator, adding these tags: BUG REPORT
and ContentTranslation
.
Please ask us any questions regarding this improvement in this thread. Thank you!

Italian Ship Informatione
modificaDear Ladies and Gentlemen,
I am looking for information on this Italian ship: CS CITTA DI MILANO (2). It is mentioned here: and here with a good picture . Specifically I am wondering if the ship was used to lay cables after 1921, which a mention on the website "atlantic-cable" would suggest, or if it's sole purpose was the supplying for Umberto Nobile's second Arctic expedition.
Grazie --Qdajet22 (msg) 19:52, 3 apr 2025 (CEST)
- It say there: "laid by Citta di Milano (2). The 870 nm cable between Malaga - Las Palmas, Canary Islands was manufactured by the same company and laid by the same ship." I can't believe I overread this and get flagged. So now I am wondering why I have gotten flagged. Is this the same cables that the Italcable took over, that were then part of Telecom Italia, Sparkle and the Italian state is going to buy? --Qdajet22 (msg) 19:57, 3 apr 2025 (CEST)

- @Super nabla Hi, this is a fair offer. However, I don´t have any experience yet with working on data objects. If I click on your links, they automatically appear in German language (I think this is the principle of Wikidata). Could you explain what exactly you need from my end? Is there a main article to be translated? Cheers, --Schwimmflosse (msg) 19:16, 16 mag 2025 (CEST)
Sub-referencing: User testing
modificaApologies for writing in English, please help us by providing a translation below
Hi I’m Johannes from Wikimedia Deutschland's Technical Wishes team. We are making great strides with the new sub-referencing feature and we’d love to invite you to take part in two activities to help us move this work further:
- Try it out and share your feedback
- Please try the updated wikitext feature on the beta wiki and let us know what you think, either on our talk page or by booking a call with our UX researcher.
- Get a sneak peak and help shape the Visual Editor user designs
- Help us test the new design prototypes by participating in user sessions – sign up here to receive an invite. We're especially hoping to speak with people from underrepresented and diverse groups. If that's you, please consider signing up! No prior or extensive editing experience is required. User sessions will start May 14th.
We plan to bring this feature to Wikimedia wikis later this year. We’ll reach out to wikis for piloting in time for deployments. Creators and maintainers of reference-related tools and templates will be contacted beforehand as well.

- 17 giugno - 1 luglio 2025: Invito a presentare candidature
Invito a porre domande

Proposal to enable the "Contribute" entry point in Italian Wikipedia
modificaCiao Italian Wikipedians,
Apologies as this message is not in your language. Aiutaci a tradurre nella tua lingua.
The WMF Language and Product Localization team proposes to enable an entry point called "Contribute" menu in your Wikipedia. The "Contribute" menu is a central place where editors can discover and access all contribution tools available in your Wikipedia.
Having this entry point is inspired by collaborative efforts with product teams at the Wikimedia Foundation, grounded in our research on Edit discovery. This research validated the idea of a dedicated entry point, revealing it as a consistent pathway for contributors to find ways to contribute content.
Enabling this entry point will help new contributors quickly discover the tools available to them, allowing them to start using the tools right away. This proposed enablement will include support for a small set of contribution tools, but the menu is designed to be extensible and more tools will be added over time. Below is important information about the "Contribute" menu.
Who Can Access It?
Once enabled, newcomers will automatically have access to this entry point by logging into their accounts. They can find the "Contribute" tab in the User drop-down menu, which will take them to another menu featuring a self-guided tab that outlines how they can contribute content, as shown in the image below.
What else can be accessed from the "Contribute" Menu?
In addition to the self-guided tabs that newcomers can click on to explore contribution tools, the menu will also include an option to "View contributions", allowing newcomers to see a list of their contributions so far.
Will this replace the "Contributions" tab for experienced contributors?
No, the "Contribute" tab on the User drop-down menu will not replace your existing "Contributions" tab. Experienced contributors will not see the "Contribute" tab in their User drop-down menu unless they choose to access it manually through Special:Contribute
.
Where else is this menu enabled?
This entry point is currently available on over 245 Wikipedias. We have received valuable feedback from contributors to some of these Wikipedias, which has helped us enhance their discoverability. One key improvement has been to make the entry point optional for experienced contributors who still prefer the default "Contributions" tab.
Will new contributors on desktop and mobile devices have access to the Contribute menu?
The "Contribute" menu will only be available to mobile users accessing Wikipedia through a browser at this initial stage. We will limit its exposure to mobile browser users only for now.
Will this change the configuration of tools in our Wikipedia?
The configuration of tools accessible through the "Contribute" menu will remain unchanged. For instance, if the Content Translation tool is restricted to specific users in your Wikipedia, it will still be inaccessible to newcomers even if they click it from the "Contribute" menu.
Why can't I see all the available tools in the "Contribute" menu in the Wikipedias where it is currently enabled?
As time goes on, other tools will become available in the "Contribute", both new and old ones.
When Will It Be Enabled in Our Wiki?
If there are no objections from your Wikipedia by July 18, 2025, we plan to deploy the "Contribute" entry point.
We welcome your feedback and questions regarding this proposal to enable the "Contribute" menu on Italian Wikipedia. We look forward to your response. Thank you!

- @UOzurumba (WMF) thanks for the message. Are we going to be able from it.wiki to customise links in the menu? I can see for "New page" there is a link to "View missing articles"; in my opinion it would be better if the link is to an help page on how to create a new article, maybe guiding the user step by step. --Paul Gascoigne (msg) 10:21, 25 giu 2025 (CEST)
- Hello Paul Gascoigne,
- You can't customise the links from the "Contribute" menu. You may have to make the request through a phabricator ticket and tag the product team responsible for the tool.
- Thank you! UOzurumba (WMF) (msg) 22:00, 21 lug 2025 (CEST)
Sister Projects Task Force reviews Wikispore and Wikinews
modificaDear Wikimedia Community,
The Community Affairs Committee (CAC) of the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees assigned the Sister Projects Task Force (SPTF) to update and implement a procedure for assessing the lifecycle of Sister Projects – wiki projects supported by Wikimedia Foundation (WMF).
A vision of relevant, accessible, and impactful free knowledge has always guided the Wikimedia Movement. As the ecosystem of Wikimedia projects continues to evolve, it is crucial that we periodically review existing projects to ensure they still align with our goals and community capacity.
Despite their noble intent, some projects may no longer effectively serve their original purpose. Reviewing such projects is not about giving up – it's about responsible stewardship of shared resources. Volunteer time, staff support, infrastructure, and community attention are finite, and the non-technical costs tend to grow significantly as our ecosystem has entered a different age of the internet than the one we were founded in. Supporting inactive projects or projects that didn't meet our ambitions can unintentionally divert these resources from areas with more potential impact.
Moreover, maintaining projects that no longer reflect the quality and reliability of the Wikimedia name stands for, involves a reputational risk. An abandoned or less reliable project affects trust in the Wikimedia movement.
Lastly, failing to sunset or reimagine projects that are no longer working can make it much harder to start new ones. When the community feels bound to every past decision – no matter how outdated – we risk stagnation. A healthy ecosystem must allow for evolution, adaptation, and, when necessary, letting go. If we create the expectation that every project must exist indefinitely, we limit our ability to experiment and innovate.
Because of this, SPTF reviewed two requests concerning the lifecycle of the Sister Projects to work through and demonstrate the review process. We chose Wikispore as a case study for a possible new Sister Project opening and Wikinews as a case study for a review of an existing project. Preliminary findings were discussed with the CAC, and a community consultation on both proposals was recommended.
Wikispore
modificaThe application to consider Wikispore was submitted in 2019. SPTF decided to review this request in more depth because rather than being concentrated on a specific topic, as most of the proposals for the new Sister Projects are, Wikispore has the potential to nurture multiple start-up Sister Projects.
After careful consideration, the SPTF has decided not to recommend Wikispore as a Wikimedia Sister Project. Considering the current activity level, the current arrangement allows better flexibility and experimentation while WMF provides core infrastructural support.
We acknowledge the initiative's potential and seek community input on what would constitute a sufficient level of activity and engagement to reconsider its status in the future.
As part of the process, we shared the decision with the Wikispore community and invited one of its leaders, Pharos, to an SPTF meeting.
Currently, we especially invite feedback on measurable criteria indicating the project's readiness, such as contributor numbers, content volume, and sustained community support. This would clarify the criteria sufficient for opening a new Sister Project, including possible future Wikispore re-application. However, the numbers will always be a guide because any number can be gamed.
Wikinews
modificaWe chose to review Wikinews among existing Sister Projects because it is the one for which we have observed the highest level of concern in multiple ways.
Since the SPTF was convened in 2023, its members have asked for the community's opinions during conferences and community calls about Sister Projects that did not fulfil their promise in the Wikimedia movement.[1][2][3] Wikinews was the leading candidate for an evaluation because people from multiple language communities proposed it. Additionally, by most measures, it is the least active Sister Project, with the greatest drop in activity over the years.
While the Language Committee routinely opens and closes language versions of the Sister Projects in small languages, there has never been a valid proposal to close Wikipedia in major languages or any project in English. This is not true for Wikinews, where there was a proposal to close English Wikinews, which gained some traction but did not result in any action[4][5], see section 5 as well as a draft proposal to close all languages of Wikinews[6].
Initial metrics compiled by WMF staff also support the community's concerns about Wikinews.
Based on this report, SPTF recommends a community reevaluation of Wikinews. We conclude that its current structure and activity levels are the lowest among the existing sister projects. SPTF also recommends pausing the opening of new language editions while the consultation runs.
SPTF brings this analysis to a discussion and welcomes discussions of alternative outcomes, including potential restructuring efforts or integration with other Wikimedia initiatives.
Options mentioned so far (which might be applied to just low-activity languages or all languages) include but are not limited to:
- Restructure how Wikinews works and is linked to other current events efforts on the projects,
- Merge the content of Wikinews into the relevant language Wikipedias, possibly in a new namespace,
- Merge content into compatibly licensed external projects,
- Archive Wikinews projects.
Your insights and perspectives are invaluable in shaping the future of these projects. We encourage all interested community members to share their thoughts on the relevant discussion pages or through other designated feedback channels.
Feedback and next steps
modificaWe'd be grateful if you want to take part in a conversation on the future of these projects and the review process. We are setting up two different project pages: Public consultation about Wikispore and Public consultation about Wikinews. Please participate between 27 June 2025 and 27 July 2025, after which we will summarize the discussion to move forward. You can write in your own language.
I will also host a community conversation 16th July Wednesday 11.00 UTC and 17th July Thursday 17.00 UTC (call links to follow shortly) and will be around at Wikimania for more discussions.
