Talk:Spam blacklist

The associated page is used by the MediaWiki Spam Blacklist extension, and lists regular expressions which cannot be used in URLs in any page in Wikimedia Foundation projects (as well as many external wikis). Any meta administrator can edit the spam blacklist. For more information on what the spam blacklist is for, and the processes used here, please see Spam blacklist/About.

Proposed additions: Please provide evidence of spamming on several wikis. Spam that only affects a single project should go to that project's local blacklist. Exceptions include malicious domains and URL redirector/shortener services. Please follow this format. Please check back after submitting your report, there could be questions regarding your request.
Proposed removals: Please check our list of requests which repeatedly get declined. Typically, we do not remove domains from the spam blacklist in response to site-owners' requests. Instead, we de-blacklist sites when trusted, high-volume editors request the use of blacklisted links because of their value in support of our projects. Please consider whether requesting whitelisting on a specific wiki for a specific use is more appropriate - that is very often the case.

There is a user (Using open proxies) adding links to a "Ban wikipedia" petition. So far, I've seen it on enwikipedia and enwikibooks, though I'm sure it's been on several other sites. enwikipedia has added it already, though they're getting around it so there's a filter in place, which they're also getting around. En.wikipedia has '\bpetition(?:online|s)?\b' on the list, which practically blocks a lot of these sites (though not all listed here). There are quite some interesting discussions out there about this type of links. Most of the .tk TLD

We had an earlier discussion about the .to URL shortening service (see Talk:Spam_blacklist/Archives/2009-12#Strange_url_shortener) that didn't seem to go anywhere, so I don't know if this will gain any traction, and in any case I can't supply a working regex that wouldn't block the whole ___domain - but per the policy on URL redirectors I'd like to point out that the registrar for the .tk is now offering semi-persistent public URL redirection from a large number of domains; see my.dot.tk/tweak/ www.dot.tk/en/index.html?lang=en, which I haven't linked in case they do get blacklisted. My guess is that this sort of URL redirection will only become more common, so it would be nice if we had a graceful way to deal with it. Gavia immer 22:47, 28 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hello guys. the HerbsTopic project - is the project aimed to give to user visual information from one site about Herbs and other plants. There are many sites about herbs, but no one of them propose many of fotos and description on various languages. With this project user can obtain this info in one place.

As I post here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herb anybody can help to develop this project.

Of course, you can say: there are wiki and other related sites, but the not propose various plant fotos from various views, and people, in common, don't view academical sites, it more comfortable for people to view many fotos in one place and don't waste time to find fotos of plant (because all fotos tagged with various languages) or find the name of the plant by fotos.

There are photografers and people what I asked to help (with fotos) and obtain it.

By posting information on wiki I aimed: 1) show people visual information; 2) draw attention to my site people who want to help with fotos.

Herbstopic project is a SITE FOR PEOPLE ONLY. I realised what it can considered as a spam and already registered (as someone already mentioned). I'm going develop Uk part. I'm not a spammer and post a links only for little part of my fotos. No more. And I'm not going to post in the future. It's only my hobby and takes me time to do so. Sorry for my actions. Both sites are repositories of self-published articles placed there for SEO purposes. For more information on ArticlesBase, see our article on it at: w:en:ArticlesBase. Links from our wikis to articles on these sites are almost always added by spammers. In the unlikely event some project needs to reference a page on one of these sites, they can always whitelist it. These sites are not inherently evil -- they're just not useful to us and are frequently spammed. We presently have several hundred articlesbase.com links (probably added by unrelated accounts) and no other articlesvana.com links.

We have many entries concerning shoe spam. There are some official sites like

but the rest of urls containing "christianlouboutin" seem to be spam.
So I suggest blacklisting of

Maybe we should cope with domains only, so

I'd opt for the more aggressive stance -- we aren't the only ones being spammed and the spammers could resort to parasitic hosting. christianlouboutin[^\.\/] and [^\.\/]christianlouboutin were what I was thinking of.

Please have a look at what regex would blacklist the affiliate-links. Comment COIbot currently does not have records on mesothelioma-cancer-usa.info, but the link has been spammed on en:wp. The link was inserted as a replacement for a .gov link. This does not qualify for good faith in my view. The users involved were blocked. googlegw.com has been spammed, but apparently only on zh:wp. There is no good faith reason for adding a parked ___domain to Wikipedia. However, there are ~10⁶ of these domains. The blacklist can't take that. I'd say blacklist these and any further spammed domains + those owned by the same spammer. MER-C 09:05, 20 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

URL shorteners. From the article en:.to: n December 2009, the URL shortener TO./ NanoURL was launched by the TLD itself. The service creates a URL address which looks like http://to./xxxx, where xxxx represents a combination of random numbers and letters. NanoURL currently generates the shortest URLs of all URL shortening services. This rare form of URL may cause problems with some browsers, which interpret this as a search term and look it up on a search engine, instead of opening it.

I am unsure why this site was added to the Wikipedia blacklist (and I am unsure how to find out), but I can only imagine that it is because people were forcefully trying to add links from the website to certain articles back in 2008, and it might have been a violation. While I am an employee of Elusiva, I am not making this request on their behalf, I am not a member of their marketing department, and I hope to present this case in the most unbiased way I can. Elusiva is a software company which licenses virtualization software to over 30,000 customers and partners. Elusiva software is featured on the websites of several software resellers and there have been press-articles released dedicated to describing the benefits Elusiva software. It is somewhat respected in its area of expertise. It seems that the Wikipedia articles regarding Desktop Virtualization, Application Virtualization and several other articles in this field of technology are somewhat incomplete without the mention of Elusiva. Additionally, perhaps, in the foreseeable future, an informative article covering Elusiva—itself becoming a well-known technology provider—would be something of interest to the public. I cannot determine whether or not the excessive editing with links to elusiva.com (which indicate some conflict of interest) will ever happen again, but I would argue that it seems to have ceased for some time now. The link was added based on this report User:SpamReportBot/cw/elusiva.com (see also User:COIBot/LinkReports/elusiva.com). It is not excessive spamming, and as such I would not oppose to remove it from the blacklist. I still find it hard to see why/where links to elusiva.com would be an useful addition to any wikipedia-article - the only possible article I could see would be one on the company itself. I am not sure if I am meant to respond, but I figured I would clarify. The articles on Desktop Virtualization, Application Virtualization and Desktop Sharing all provide a somewhat informative list of companies which provide such software (as Elusiva does) along with links to those companies' Wikipedia articles. Perhaps an articles about Elusiva would be one of the steps in making those above mentioned articles a little more informative (although, I am no expert), but, from what I understand, the first step would have to be to have elusiva.com removed from the blacklist. Fiorano is a proper company and the spamming was the result, I believe, of an ill-advised junior employee. The issues were some time back, I think it's safe to remove this now. Please see OTRS ticket 2009120710020837 for more details, but the summary is that three or four OTRS volunteers, none of us meta admins but all I think enWP admins, are persuaded this is safe to remove by now. Dear EdBever, I will never try to put a link on wikipedia for this tourism portal. The web site has become a very relevant spot for info on Macedonia as well as Macedonian tourism. I've learned it from the hard way that, wikipedia is not a link directory, and all the externall links are nofollow. This web is already listed at dmoz.org and ezilon.com.

This request was just to be removed from the spam links, because it definetely doesn't deserve to have a spam status website.

Added to the blacklist this May, for allegedly being an url shortener. Even though the point for blocking such sites has been made clear, it is not the case for this link, which is instead a web archiving service (useful, for example, to keep a record of the status of a media source page displaying the license of the work at the time an image is uploaded). WebCite (webcitation.org) isn't blacklisted and will archive pages on demand. Any service like this (including archive.org) can in theory be used to avoid the blacklist, but they are also obviously useful for real tasks. The other issue is that such services are in a gray area with regard to copyright status, and I don't see that backupurl.com has any copyright information or contact info for copyright complaints. By contrast, archive.org and webcitation.org both have prominent information available in that regard. Last time I tried to use webcite it didn't work (I think the target page was returning an incorrect http header). That's why I tried backupurl, and I was surprised it was blocked. Regarding the usage for spamming, it's inconsistent to block it while keeping webcite clear. But considering the concerns you mention regarding copyright info, I think it can remain blocked. This is the official website for a telecom services (voice and data) company that has been in operation for over a decade. I think there must have been an incident in the past where someone gained control of their web server which resulted in this ___domain sending spam emails. Archiving errors caused by blacklisting

As noted by two users on en.wiki here, blacklisting can cause archiving problems if a link is mentioned on a talk page before it is blacklisted, as bots cannot add the link to the archive, meaning that many threads can be lost. Is there anyway this could be remedied? I think the easiest way would be for admins to check that the link isn't mentioned anywhere before adding it to the blacklist. Well, as Smackbot first tries to save a thread to the archive, and then blanks those threads from the original, I would say, that if Smackbot would run into a failure to save (the blacklist is not the only reason why that may happen, though probably the most frequent one and the easiest one to prevent) that it should not blank threads in the first place.

(frustration follows, my apologies, nothing personal, the misunderstanding is common under most editors) That being said, the blacklist, as the rest of Wikipedia, is run by volunteers. Only a few of them, unfortunately. The size and scale of spam however, takes a lot of time (while some regulars here would also like to do other things, like actually building an encyclopedia). Cleaning up behind editors is an important task, but mainspace (template space included) is our first concern, and talkpages etc. are only a lower concern, and unfortunately we do not always get to clearing those links on talkpages.

Solving this by first removing all the rubbish before blacklisting is unfortunately a total misunderstanding of the size of the problem. We blacklist when additions are uncontrollable, cleaning is a lower concern (especially since saving a page which already contains a blacklisting link is not a problem, the only problem is when one adds (in one form or another) a link to a page). If links first need to be cleaned, then you keep running behind the spammers, and the disruption continues.

But of course, you are free to invite more editors here who can help solving the problem in the way you describe - but with the current number of editors active here, that will be an impossible task. Thanks for your understanding. --Dirk Beetstra ^{T C} (en: U, T) 08:06, 16 December 2010 (UTC)Reply
