Wikipedia:Translation into English

Wikipedia is a multilingual project; as such, we may have articles on one subject available in many languages. The various languages each appear in semi-separate wikis, linked by interlanguage links.

Articles on the same subject in separate languages are independently editable and edited; they are not required to be translations of one another or to strictly maintain a correspondence in form, style, content, or attitude (so long as they all accord with the NPOV policy), though it is hoped that polyglots who work in multiple languages will help spread new information around between the articles in different languages. This page exists in support of that work.

Translating entire articles into another language can be helpful when getting started, but there are some caveats:

  • Translation is hard. Amateur translators tend to produce prose that is unnatural, and perhaps incorrect when it comes to specialized terminology.
  • Machine translation is much much worse. Never use machine translation to create an article!

This page exists as a place to request and to coordinate translations of articles from foreign-language Wikipedias into English. Creation of a similar page in any foreign-language Wikipedia is encouraged, but this page is not intended as a place to request translations in the opposite direction (i.e. from English to another language). That would belong on a meta-page of the appropriate Wikipedia.

Please note that for copyright reasons, this page is not for requesting translation of sources external to any Wikipedia. The exception to this is if you can also show that the license conditions of the source page would permit its redistribution under the GFDL, e.g. if the page is public ___domain or itself GFDL-ed, or if permission has been obtained from the author. In that case you should state the copying terms clearly with your request, including if relevant a link to a "terms and conditions" page of the source website.

See Wikipedia:Pages needing translation into English for pages on the English Wikipedia that will shortly be deleted unless translated.

This page has two major sections:

Due to its length the list of translators has been moved to a separate page:

There are also Instructions on how to deal with pages needing translation.

This project was started on February 10, 2004.

Instructions

To request an article please add a level-3 heading and indicate:

  • Article: link to foreign-language article in the form [[:xx:Title]]. Remember the initial colon before the language code. Without it the link will point to the equivalent of this translation page in the specified language.
  • Corresponding English-language article: <article name> (or None); should be filled in if article already exists or if someone does a partial translation.
  • Worth doing because: Typically one or more of
    • No corresponding English article
    • Material to incorporate into English-language article
    • Seems to contradict English-language article
    • Specialized local knowledge
  • Originally Requested by: <user> <date> (use ~~~~)
  • Status: (originally) "Unclaimed".
To take responsibility for the work, indicate "In progress <user> <date>".
If you're finished with what you can handle, but there is more to do: "Partially translated by <user> <date>".
One step past that might be "Translated, but review requested by <user> <date>".
If it's finished, mark it "Complete <user> <date>" and move it (as described below).
  • Other notes: Anything else you want to add.
  • Supported: Other users can sign here to support the request.

Follow the last line with an HTML <br /> to keep the software happy: it does not preserve the presence of a blank line in a bullet list.

When writing a request on this page, you can also add {{translation request|LANGUAGE}} on the talk page of the equivalent English article, if one exists. Replace LANGUAGE with the language in which the original article is written. This produces the following message:

[[{{{pg}}}]]

The original article is in English.

Please do indicate in the references section of the newly created article that an article in a foreign-language Wikipedia was among your sources. For example, the references section of the article "Paragraph 175" begins, Much of the content of this article comes from the equivalent German-language wikipedia article (retrieved September 30, 2004). The following references are cited by that German-language article..." Note that something like this (without that last sentence) would be in order even if the German-language article did not cite any references of its own.

Also, please don't forget to add interwiki links all around.

When you complete work on an article, it would be polite to inform the original requester on his/her talk page, move this request to the talk page of the relevant article, and add an entry to Completed Translations.

After about 30 days, even that can be moved to Wikipedia:Translation archive

  • Article: various
  • Corresponding English-language article: French science fiction, Science fiction
  • Worth doing because: Extensive, interesting, useful information
  • Originally Requested by: Diderot 15:26, 21 Apr 2004 (UTC)
  • Status: In progress
  • Other notes: This is an on-going personal project for which I would appreciate any help I can get. The French articles on science fiction have content which is original, interesting and quite different from related English content. I am trying to bring that material over to the English Wikipedia by adding content about Anglo-American and global science fiction to the relevant English pages, and by creating a set of new pages - a sort of micropedia - around French language science fiction in particular, with the article French science fiction acting as a hub. Also, this content should be referenced back to the French wikipedia and where it reveals gaps on the French side, stubs and translations ought to go up on the French side.

If this sounds interesting to you and you can translate, just go over to French science fiction or to the French wikipedia and dive in, or if you can't translate, copy-edit and peer review translated articles.

However, I think it would be a great addition because it's an article very unique to French wikipedia right now.

  • Article: Hijab

  • Originally Requested by: gren グレン 02:52, 13 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
  • Status: (both were long articles at start)
  • Other notes: Since both articles are already fairly long it will be difficult to keep a balance and make sure there isn't redundancy. Also, French bias likely meets Anglo-bias so that should be watched out for.

  • Article: fr:Naissance d'un album de Tintin
  • Corresponding English-language article: Creation of a Tintin album

Some nice GFDL pictures there too that should probably be uploaded to commons if someone descide to translate the article. Only use the images used in the Wikipedia article though, one of the linked sites is obviously the source of the images and contain many more, however that site is lisensed under Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 2.0 wich is incompatable with the Wikipedia. The person who run that site contributed those images to the Wikipedia article and released them under GFDL, but that only apply to those images, not the entire site. --Sherool 00:07, 7 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

comment:
The English article on the African elephant is a stub.--Fenice 5 July 2005 20:09 (UTC)

Our information is spread across three articles, elephant, Loxodonta (which African Elephant redirects to) and Savannah Elephant. The last of these would be the appropriate one, not the one on the genus. It doesn't look like the Spanish article is quite up to date; it doesn't distinguish between the two species of African elephants. This might make it difficult to translate without introducing inaccuracies into the English articles.-gadfium 5 July 2005 21:27 (UTC)
The author es:usuario:Hossmann studies biology at the Madrid university. So I guess he knows what he is doing. Also, there is some confusion about the term African elephant: it is used mainly as a translation for the Latin loxodonta, but also for the subspecies loxodonta africana, which is the Savannah Elephant. (The redirect "African Elephant should probably be a disambiguation page). The author of the Spanish article seems to be describing all loxodonta though: see section alimentación: Según habiten en el bosque, en las praderas o los semidesiertos, el porcentaje de hierbas y hojas de árboles o arbustos de su dieta varía notablemente. That would include the Forest elephant. He distinguishes between subspecies at the bottom of the article, by the way. Also note that he calls the subspiecies Savannah elephant loxodonta africana africana, whereas it is called loxodonta africana in our template.--Fenice 09:32, 11 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I have checked this again and I do think the Spanish article is up to date. Some of the confusion arises because different classification schemes are used: en.wiki uses Cuvier and es.wiki uses Blumenbach, but both articles are describing the same animal.--Fenice 09:50, 11 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
