Groningen (population 179,400) is a city in the north of the Netherlands, and the capital of the Groningen province.
The city is noted for its Martinitoren (Martini Tower), the second tallest church tower in the Netherlands, and is the home of the University of Groningen.
The municipality of Groningen has an area of 82,52 km² (of which 2,67 km² is water), and includes the following towns: Dorkwerd, Engelbert, Hoogkerk, Leegkerk, Middelbert, Noorddijk, Noorderhoogebrug, Oosterhogebrug, Roodehaan, Ruischerbrug, Vierverlaten.
