  • IPA(key): [ʁeˈɡiːʁʊŋsbəˌt͡sɪʁk]
  • Audio:(file)
  • Hyphenation: Re‧gie‧rungs‧be‧zirk

Noun

edit

Regierungsbezirk m (strong, genitive Regierungsbezirks or Regierungsbezirkes, plural Regierungsbezirke)

  1. (Germany) an administrative subdivision of some federal states (Bundesländer), currently existing in four of the five most populous states (North Rhine-Westphalia, Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, and Hesse; in Lower Saxony abolished in 2005)

Usage notes

edit
  • State governments are independent from the federal government and municipal governments are independent from both of these (such independence being defined and limited by law, of course). To the contrary, Regierungsbezirke are mere bodies (Behörden) of the respective state.
