Storia
Il primo numero di Pro Wrestling Illustrated fu pubblicato nel 1979. La particolarità di tale rivista è quella di non rompere la kayfabe, ovvero di riportare ciò che accade nel corso degli spettacoli come se non fosse predeterminato; questa strategia non è stata seguita da molte altre riviste del settore, che raccontano la vita reale dei wrestler e ciò che accade lontano dalle scene; PWI non lo ha mai fatto ed ha perciò sempre trattato le storyline come se fossero accadimenti reali. Negli ultimi anni tuttavia la rivista ha leggermente cambiato il suo approccio editoriale avvicinandosi allo "shoot writing", usando termini come "storyline" e differenziando tra le faide che si svolgono "sullo schermo" e controversie tra wrestler nella vita reale.
PWI non segue solo le federazioni maggiori, ma copre anche una buona fetta del panorama delle federazioni indipendenti di wrestling; ogni mese sulla rivista vengono indicate delle "classifiche" dei wrestler per ognuna delle maggiori federazioni e delle più importanti indipendenti ed una graduatoria generale per i wrestler singoli e i tag team.
Già dal primo numero della rivista, PWI dichiarò di riconoscere solo tre "Titoli Mondiali": quello della National Wrestling Alliance, quello della American Wrestling Association ed ovviamente quello della World Wrestling Federation. Quando la Jim Crockett Promotions, che controllava l'NWA World Heavyweight Championship, divenne la World Championship Wrestling nel 1991, la WCW acquisì lo status di federazione con Titolo del Mondo a scapito della NWA che perse tale privilegio. Anche la Extreme Championship Wrestling guadagnò il riconoscimento di federazione con Titolo del Mondo nel 1999, poco prima di chiudere per bancarotta. Il Titolo NWA fu riportato tra i World Title nel luglio 2006 sulla scia del successo della Total Nonstop Action, detentrice fino al 2014 dei diritti su tale cintura. PWI ha inoltre esteso lo status di World Title ad un secondo titolo della WWE, in modo da avere un Titolo del Mondo per il roster di Raw (WWE Championship) e per quello di SmackDown (World Heavyweight Championship).
Editorialista responsabile della rivista è stato per molti anni Bill Apter. Apter è un volto noto per gli appassionati di wrestling, poiché ha assistito a tutti i più importanti eventi degli ultimi anni per scattare foto da inserire nella sua rivista, intrattendosi spesso con altri appassionati. Stuart M. Saks è l'attuale publisher. Sin dalla sua fondazione, si sono avvicendati diversi articolisti: i più famosi sono Matt Brock, Liz Hunter, Thomas Pilliard (indicato come la "fonte interna alla WWF/WWE) e lo "psicologo del wrestling" Dr. Sidney M. Basil; i quattro nomi indicati sono tuttavia nomi di fantasia, dietro ai quali si celano altre persone.
Benché vengano condotte spesso interviste con i wrestler, la maggior parte delle frasi riguardanti feud o angle attribuite ad un lottatore sono spesso frutto della fantasia degli articolisti; la regola è questa: se una frase attribuita ad un wrestler riguarda la sua vita reale o comunque fatti accaduti lontano dalle telecamere questa è effettivamente attribuibile al lottatore. Viceversa, qualora il wrestler parli di un qualche angle o di qualche altra gimmick o di eventi in atto nel corso degli show allora è tipicamente creata ad arte dagli articolisti.
La sede attuale di PWI è a Blue Bell, in Pennsylvania, ed è pubblicata dalla "Kappa Publishing".
Al giorno d'oggi i più grandi rivali della rivista non sono gli altri periodici cartacei sul wrestling, ma i siti Internet; PWI mantiene tuttavia buoni livelli di vendita, riuscendo a sopravvivere.
PWI Awards
Il gruppo delle riviste di PWI assegna premi annuali sin dal 1972. A differenza dei PWI 500, che nascono dai voti dello staff della rivista, gli altri premi sono decisi dai voti dei fans.
Annualmente viene pubblicato un numero speciale del magazine per celebrare i "PWI Awards"; vengono indicati, oltre al vincitore, anche il secondo, il terzo ed il quarto classificato accompagnati dal numero di voti ricevuti. Per ogni premio vinto, il wrestler riceve una targa commemorativa.

Edizioni speciali di PWI
Oltre al già citato speciale per i "PWI Awards" e ad un numero speciale di fine anno, PWI pubblica regolarmente (o ha pubblicato) altri numeri speciali. Un esempio è il Pro Wrestling Illustrated Wrestling Almanac & Book of Facts (dal 1996), nel quale sono incluse tutte le classifiche della "PWI 500", la storia dei Titoli, la storia dei pay-per-view, le statistiche dei wrestler, gli avvenimenti più importanti dell'anno nel mondo del wrestling, i vincitori dei PWI Award e la lista di "cosa è In" e "cosa è Out".
PWI pubblica inoltre la rivista Women of Wrestling, nella quale sono incluse brevi biografie delle diva del wrestling e molte fotografie.
Dal 1989 al 2000, PWI ha pubblicato una newsletter settimanale chiamata PWI Weekly, nella quale si potevano trovare i risultati della precedente settimana per quanto riguarda show di wrestling, passaggi di Titoli, aggiornamento sugli infortuni, wrestling che lasciano/entrano a far parte di una federazione e decessi. La newsletter fu cancellata per problemi di natura economica e di tempo necessari alla sua produzione.
