Hi, and welcome to Wikipedia! If you're new to our community, drop us a note here and tell us a little bit about yourself. Most important, we would like to know about your interests (for which we have a separate page), your areas of knowledge, and the sorts of things you'd like to work on here at Wikipedia. That makes it easier for us to help you start editing. We'd also appreciate it if you told us how you found out about Wikipedia.

To add yourself to the list:
  • post a comment,
  • enter your name as the subject/headline (which will make a new header for you in the log), and
  • sign your name at the end of your comment by typing four tildes: ~~~~. (This code makes a link to your user page, which readers can use to welcome you personally if they like).
Your comments will then be added to the bottom of the list.

You may also like to add yourself to other lists, such as the listing in order of arrival, by country, or by skills (such as translation or photography). Finally, if you want a little personal assistance in using or contributing to the site, you might go through one of the Bootcamps or you may wish be adopted by an experienced editor.

An automatically generated list of new users can be found at Special:Log/Newusers.

Hi! Found this place about a week ago. Posted a few new articles so far. Still learning the conventions. Have heard of wiki elsewhere on the web and found an article of interest to me here. Specific interests include history in general, with a specific interest the Catskill region of New York State. Also have a general interest in railroads.

Hello. Have just created username after getting into trouble for vandalism to Transposing instruments (within the last hour or so - currently 4.32am in Bundaberg, Australia). Sorry about that. I was just amazed that a nobody could change web pages just like that.

I have been a medical transcriptionist (diagnostic radiology) for about two years. Before that I taught piano and music theory for 8.5 years. I had a good reputation as a music teacher and have diplomas in piano performance and teaching. So maybe I can be of some use in these areas.

avaiki - jason brown

Kia orana, greetings, all,

I have been resident since I was 12 years old in Avaiki, Cook Islands, arriving there with my mother and younger brother in 1977. In 1982, I got a job as a reporter with the only daily newspaper, Cook Islands News, beginning a career that has taken me through most parts of the industry. I have wide general knowledge about the country's historical heritage, including links to Maori in New Zealand, Maohi in Tahiti and Maoli in Hawaii. My time has been very limited until this year when I basically stepped back from the frontlines and am recovering from burnout, etc, bla bla bla.

Wikipedia has saved my bacon as a reporter on so many occasions that I thought it was time to get involved more formally and put something back while rebuilding my personal life. Usual mid-life crisis, bla bla bla but no younger woman, yet.

Over my career, I have been humbled and honoured by seeing many amazing things, but the one that comes to mind is a young man from Fiji who visited my adoptive home island for a canoe festival. He scuffed away the gravel under his feet, knelt in the dust in front of the VIP tent, and asked forgiveness in advance from the aronga mana, the leaders of the land, for any offence he and his team mates caused through their ignorance of local custom. Likewise, me as I stumble into the wikisphere.

Kia manuia, bon chance,

Wikipedia is great because of quick reference. It can increase one's knowledge exponentially. However, the electronic factor is a problem insofar as the printed page is much more benign (no electronics). I have an initial comment regarding some Wikipedia procedure. To create articles you need going into "help" and clicking the blue keywords. Why not have "create a page" or article as an icon? I lost material initially and I had an account. I still don't know why I lost material. Also, I am tentative about putting info in because of so-called "session loss." Also a spell and grammar checker would be a nice added feature. No matter how professional you are, people still misspell words. People who don't use spell or grammar checkers are just arrogant and need to be more docible. I am a good speller, but typos are a norm. My Ph.D. is in English common Law and I am the leader of the spiritual teaching AKATHA, the Ancient Science of Sahaji (Soul Travel). I have been teaching Sahaji for thirty-five (35) years and recently came back from India living in a Hindu ashram for awhile. Rick Maerkle Rickmark 01:13, 17 October 2006 (UTC)

Hello, my name is Frederick Joseph Maerkle lll, my friends know me as Rick Maerkle. Please call me Rick Maerkle.

I am a Business Broker in Florida, selling all kinds of businesses and small companies since 1990. Over 500 sold. Prior to my current career, I worked at Harris Corp in Electronic Engineering as an Engineering Specialist. I have worked on such projects as the space shuttle, F18 jet test electronics, B1B Bomber communication electronics, and several satellite systems.

I consider myself quite knowledgeable in most aspects of electronics, digital, RF, analog, software, computer systems, etc. I play a little at web page design.

My engineering background certainly does not hurt my ability to sell and understand most small businesses. Consider the 6 concrete inch flooring required for a machine shop and three phase electricity or special insulation required for a film warehouse. It seems that my engineering education has been quite helpful selling small businesses, restaurants, landscape companies, drafting service businesses, etc.

At 51 years of age, I have owned my own brokerage since 1990, and worked ten years at Harris Corp prior, that’s 27 years, two jobs. Prior to that, I worked at Digital Corp and Centronics as a technician. (one year each) Prior to that, I went to college on my GI BIll after three years in the Army, (age 17 to 20) working in the motor pool on jeeps and trucks.

I was a serious student in High School who dreamed of working in physics. I guess, I took the long road to find myself back at the beginning. My joke all my life was, I could do calculus, but can’t spell a lick! Go figure.

I say all this because, I discovered this web site seeking some answers to questions I have in this world, year 2006. It appears that I have discovered a simpler quicker way to understand current technologies.

Weirdly enough, I went into business sales to raise enough money to be free and work on some of my own engineering ideas. Well, here I am, older, maybe wiser.

Lasty, It's not all work, I sail, ride a motorcycle, fish, travel, and enjoy great food, football & cold beer. :-)

I've been using Wikipedia as a reader for over a year now, and recently registered to fix/update a few articles. I think Wikipedia is one of the greatest things to happen to the Internet. I wouldn't use it as an EXCLUSIVE source on a topic, but it provides excellent background information on most topics, just as an encyclopedia is supposed to do. But Wikipedia is much more timely than a physical encyclopedia, and it delves deeply into topics that traditional encyclopedias ignore, like popular culture (Star Wars, the Simpsons, etc.).

As for me, I make my living as a poker writer/photographer, covering news and major poker tournaments (World Poker Tour, World Series of Poker). I closely follow developments of Apple's Macintosh, OS X, iPod, and iTunes, and I have a variety of other interests, including physics and politics. BJ Nemeth 05:21, 25 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm now retired from EQ (I gave up when raids took up to several hours per encounter) and MMOGs though. Eats too much time, much like surfing thru Wikipedia... :) I personally believe that Wikipedia cannot replace traditional Encyclopaedias. Hello Wikipedians! I'm not much of a new user; I've been using wp for years and made the leap to editing a few months ago. I guess I kinda crept in under the radar. I'm an EE so my interests tend to lie in the scientific/computing/technical/science fiction fields. I've made fairly extensive modifications to the soldering article and though it's not done by any means, I think it's coming along nicely. I also created my first article for dancer/singer/actress Michelle Johnston. At the moment I'm mostly just finding my way around, patching up some vandalisms as I become aware of them, making an addition or two as they present themselves. Take a look at my first contrib to see what needled me into signing up. However, I'm now writing an article (draft growing on my talk page). I'll be needing some help on using images and maybe templates (though I'm trying to figure those out for myself). Also on the care, feeding, and classification of projects and taskforces, so when I finish this screed I'm off to look at being adopted or mentored.

My youngest chld turned 18 and is away now, so I have access to the computer. I have an Associate in Art Degree and am a LPN. I am not currently employeed, due to a back injury from work. I sing in the church choir and solo (acopelo). I've always wanted to learn to play a musical instrument, but grew up poor and couldn't afford lessons. I have a guitar, but its in the closet in a case and I can't remember the last time I saw it. I always thought I'd like to play piano too, but... Its hard for me to sing with the choir unless I make my own symbols, cause I can't read music either. HA! Bet you think I'm a real "oldie". NO! just grew up in the sticks. Would like to meet friends. It's currently around 4000, but I can't remember exactly... Littleghostboo[ talk ] 08:49, 2 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'm NinaEliza

Hi!

I've been fascinated with Wikipedia for a couple of weeks now. It started when I found out that Iris Chang, a former classmate at Uni High, had died. I found this out on an alumni newsletter and I wanted to know more, so I googled her. The first entry was Wikipedia, and I was struck with how detailed it was. Since then I have been logging on to Wikipedia every day and looking up....whatever! I've also read several discussion pages and appreciate the civil tone of the dialogue that most editors and admins engage in.

Consequently, I've decided to make Wikipedia my new hobby. Unfortunately, I don't have any specialized knowledge, but I'm reasonably intelligent and have a good command of the English language. I'm also a tenacious and resourceful internet researcher.

I have made teensy proofreading corrections to a couple of pages, but am at a loss as to what to do next. I initially looked up the "needed" articles, but I don't really feel qualified to start any of them myself. I would appreciate a little direction and mentoring.

I am a Nichiren Buddhist, I'm half black half white, I make gemstone wire-wrapped jewelry, I have Bi-Polar Disorder, and I'm the program coordinator for Compeer Santa Cruz (CA). I also absolutely love all forms of music.

Thanks for your attention and I look forward to a response,

Luca Pavone

The name should say all. If not, I'm just here to make minor contributions to gaming stubs and such. I've made a couple of contributions on the game King of Dragons and I think I got it going by mentioning it in Yashichi.

All in all, I like Wikipedia, it's helped me a fair bit with some studies I've done for school as well as some, shall we say, Independent research. Hahaha, well, it's mainly looking up info on games and other things which interest me.

Well, do pop into my user page or leave a note or whatever you guys do! Luca Pavone 11:29, 3 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi!

I signed up for a Wikipedia account about a year ago because I had to write and article on Wikipedia as a media assignment. since then I have not done much, but recently I have made a few minor edits here and there. subject areas to which I think I may be able to contribute: (?) Well, I'm really good at English so I can do general editing. I'd also like to translate into French (I think there's certainly more work to be done there, they have far fewer articles) (although my French is not perfect I can start the job; someone else can fix the spelling!;)) Anyways I don't know if I have to create two user accounts to do that; what's the best way? I have firsthand knowledge of Islamic and Iranian tradition, I don't know what else that would be of use, because I'm young so I'm not a specialist or anything, but I think I have a good base of general knowledge. Drop a message on my talk page if you want! Monagz 22:38, 5 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

wiki for education

I'm a Physics teacher at the Aviation Academy in Newport News, VA. I'm looking into the use of wiki's for a class project. I have had a project in Virtual Teams, where students email one another and contribute information as a team then email the teacher.

Maybe, this wiki will act as a standing contribution area for the students.

Our school is a 4-year high school that teaches aviation maintenance (A&P), engineering, piloting, and information technology - A+, Cisco, Security+, Wi-Fi.

 We'll see if this works.

Hello

I am dharh and a computer science major. I am a big fan of organization of data and ease of use of getting that data. Kuro5hin, digg, slashdot, del.icio.us, and of course Wikipedia are some my favorite web sites. I love the idea of open source news and information which all of those sites are pretty much about.

Hello, my name is Keiche. First of all, it's not pronounced Key-chay, it's Key-shh, like sheesh with a K instead of an S. I get quite annoyed with the people who pronounce it wrong. My intrests are Halo: The Fall of Reach, Halo: The Flood, Halo: The First Strike, Halo: The Ghosts of Onyx, Halo Combat Evolved, and Halo 2, and all sorts of Halo Machinimas. It's pretty obvious I know a lot about the Halo universe. I got here from the Halo Machinima Red VS Blue. When they got the featured article, they gave a link here. I think I might want to help with WikiProject Halo, once I've figured out how to do anything on this site.....

US SUBMARINE HISTORY OF WWII

Yes, I am a US Submarine Veteran of World War II and am most interested in developing a historic record of all the known men who died during that war.

This is a personal research project developed to perpetuate their memory and primarily for the descendants and families of the more than 3,600 men lost.

For inclusion in this historic research, they must have been attached to a US Submarine Command or associated with a lost US Submarine of WWII. Passengers are included and with the submarine men, they have already been documented with data such as full name, rate or rank, boat he was associated with, date of death, hometown, awards, USN Service number, where his name is engraved and additional genealogical information when available.

Hiya folks, longtime reader, new... time registree. I would like to think that I am fairly knowledgeable in the fields of, and not to sound like geek, the Star Wars Expanded Universe, myriad video and computer games from as far back as the SNES/GEN days (not to say I'm unaware of the NES and those that preceded it), and things which you would sort in the bin containing Tron, Wargames, and other things. I'm an eighteen year old gamer (who proudly lacks the 'l33t' mentality in favor of cynicism and good sportsmanship), an avid fan of Dune and the Hitchhiker's Guide sagas, and I'm a stickler for proper grammar and spelling who will deny and subtly hide any errors on my part, common as they are. let me know what you think. i am not sure.it first the edits that i do may just be an address and phone number and a link to the schools site. is that good enough? is there a certain format i need to do them in?

Hi Billaborn7447, you should probably take a look at WP:SCHOOLS which has all the guidelines and information you will need to create school pages. Its probably best not to put phone numbers and addresses on but a link to the school site would be a good idea. any questions don't hesitate to ask! 1. First upload the image. Look for the tab saying upload file near the bottom left of the page. Also see Wikipedia:Uploading images
  2. Next tag it correctly with the appropriate Wikipedia:Image copyright tags. Generally an image created by yourself would be tagged under GFDL. Few other tags can also be used.

I flatter myself that I can use/write (Australian) English acceptably well and have a reasonable grasp of punctuation and grammar (loved the book Eats Shoots & Leaves). Hopefully I'll do more good than bad! Found out about Wikipedia from one of my brothers-in-law IIRC.
Catch you 'round the campus.
