History

edit

The village is tied into the history of the former St Edward's Hospital, located close to the villages of Cheddleton and Leekbrook. In 1892, the hospital was constructed on land near the village and was officially opened in 1895. Post-WWII, the hospital became part of the National Health Service and continued to be in operation up until 2002, when it was closed and later converted into a residential developement with new houses and repurposed buildings.[3]

Amenities

edit

The village is predominantly residential and rural. The village featured in an article published by the Stoke Sentinel in August 2023, when a house was put up for sale for £1.3 million. It featured its own spa, sauna and wave pool.[4]

The village also has a mile marker post, which is a grade II listed structure. It was given the status by Historic England in December 1985.[5]

Transport

edit

There are regular bus services between Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent and Leek. As well as Cheddleton and Westwood College. These stop at "Birchall Lane".[6]
