Avra Banerjee is an Indian-born classical musician, composer, and sarod player based in Perth, Western Australia. Known for his mastery in blending Indian classical music with global and contemporary forms, he is a prolific recording artist and a prominent figure in world music fusion.
Early life
editAvra was born in Kolkata, India, and is the son of theatre artist Asit Bandopadhyay, a co-founder of the theatre group Nandikar. He began his musical training under Prof. Dhyanesh Khan and later became a disciple of Ustad Aashish Khan. His training follows the Maihar Gharana tradition of Hindustani classical music.
Avra later moved to Australia and is currently based in Perth.[1]
Musical career
editAvra has released over 65 original singles and several studio albums, covering genres such as Hindustani classical, world fusion, ghazal, Sufi, and contemporary Hindi music.
He has collaborated with a range of Indian and international artists, including Hariharan, Pt. Swapan Chaudhuri, Ustad Taufiq Qureshi, Ustad Rashid Khan, Talat Aziz, Mahalakshmi Iyer, George Brooks, Purbayan Chatterjee, Shashank Subramaniam, Ambi Subramaniam
