Chùa Phổ Lại (Pho Lai Pagoda) is a Buddhist temple under the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, located in Phong Thai Ward, Huế City, Vietnam. The pagoda is associated with religious, cultural, and social life in the midland region of Central Vietnam.[1][2][3][4]
Location
editThe pagoda is situated more than 20 km northwest of Huế city center, on elevated land with a hill behind, facing a lotus pond, and surrounded by cajeput forest, rice fields, and local residences.[1]
History
editOriginally established as Pho Lai Buddhist Hall (Niệm Phật đường Phổ Lại), it was founded by Decision No. 197/QĐ-UBND on 29 January 2016 by the People's Committee of Thừa Thiên Huế Province. In the same year, Venerable Thích Trung Hiếu was invited to serve as the abbot.[1][4][2]
Construction
edit- 2016–2021: Construction of the main hall (232 m², groundbreaking on 28 August 2016), kitchen, living quarters, Buddha statues, and a 500 kg bell.[1]
- 2022–2025: Additions included the main gate, flood-prevention embankments, a Avalokiteśvara statue (16 June 2023), a two-story meditation hall (100 m²), guest house, and the landscaped “Serene Hill” (Đồi Tịnh Tâm).[2]
- On 2 May 2024, the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha of Thừa Thiên Huế officially appointed Venerable Thích Trung Hiếu as abbot (Decision No. 106/QĐ-BTS).[3]
Religious practice and social engagement
editThe pagoda organizes mindfulness retreats, Vesak celebrations, Avalokiteśvara rites, vegetarian buffet feasts, Dharma classes, and filial piety programs during the Vu Lan season. Charitable works include scholarships, seasonal donations, Mid-Autumn Festival events for children, and flood relief in Central Vietnam. In 2020, relief efforts were recorded with a total budget exceeding 464 million VND.[3][4] Additionally, the pagoda installed 25 solar-powered lamps, supported traditional medicine treatment, and helped repair roofs for disadvantaged households.[1]
