CrewLAB is an American sports team management platform designed for endurance sports teams, initially focusing on rowing. It provides tools for workout logging, communication between coaches and athletes, team challenges, and analytics to track participation and training trends.[1] The company is based in Los Angeles, California, and Boston, Massachusetts.[2]
History
editCrewLAB was founded in 2019 by Simon Hoadley,[3] former UCLA rowing coach, and Tim Maytom and Dominic Pardini,[4] both former captains of the UCLA rowing team. The founders, who met in the 2010s through their involvement with UCLA rowing, developed the platform in response to the use of multiple separate tools such as spreadsheets, group chats, and manual planning systems in sports programs[5].
The platform was initially launched for rowing teams in 2020. By 2025, it reported serving over 1,000 teams internationally. CrewLAB participated in the UCLA Startup Accelerator Program in 2021[6][7], and in 2022 was a finalist in the Boston University New Venture Competition, winning the Audience Choice award[8]. In 2023, the company raised approximately US$1.6 million in pre-seed funding from venture investors.[9][10][11] In 2024, it was named to the Bruin Business 100, a UCLA Alumni Association recognition of alumni entrepreneurs.[12]
In December 2023, CrewLAB announced a partnership with USRowing to offer member organizations onboarding support and extended trial access.[13]
In October 2024, a similar agreement was made with Rowing New Zealand.[14]
By late 2024, the company reported over 10,000 athletes using the platform in rowing, running, swimming, and triathlon, with adoption in North America, Australasia, and Europe.
Platform
editCrewLAB is accessible via web browser and mobile applications for iOS and Android.[15][16] The platform supports logging of various training activities, including on-water rowing sessions, ergometer workouts, running, cross-training, and strength training. Logged activities may include distance, duration, rate of perceived exertion (RPE), wellness indicators such as sleep quality and mood, and optional notes.[17]
Training sessions can be entered by athletes, assigned by coaches, or imported from third-party applications such as Garmin devices and Concept2’s ErgData app.[18].The system also includes communication tools such as daily check-ins, athlete comments, and feedback threads. CrewLAB supports group training challenges, such as the “Summer Smasher,” a points-based participation challenge held during the off-season.[19]
The company has partnered with safeguarding initiative #WeRideTogether to implement moderated team communication channels within the platform.[20]
