Hermann Stuppner (born 1957 in Deutschnofen, South Tyrol) is a pharmacognosist and retired professor at the University of Innsbruck. He is renowned for his research on medicinal plants and natural product chemistry, particularly on plants used in traditional medicine in Europe and Asia.[1][2] Stuppner has contributed to the scientific understanding of traditional herbal remedies and their applications in modern medicine. During his career, he received several national and international awards, including Austria's prestigious Cross of Honour for Science and Art, First Class.[3]
Early Life and Education
editHermann Stuppner attended the Franciscan Gymnasium in Bolzano and then studied pharmacy at the University of Innsbruck from 1976 to 1982.[1] After completing his master's degree, he passed the Italian state examination for the pharmacy profession at the University of Padua in 1983. Stuppner received his doctorate in pharmaceutical biology from the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich in 1985 with a dissertation on constituents of Echinacea purpurea. He then conducted postdoctoral research, specializing in phytochemical and toxicological studies, at the University of California, Irvine (USA). In 1987, he returned to Austria and joined the Institute of Pharmacognosy at the University of Innsbruck. In 1993, he completed his habilitation at the Institute of Pharmacognosy, University of Innsbruck. In 1995, he received a call for a C-3 professorship in "Pharmazeutische Biologie" at the University of Marburg, Germany, and in 1997, he was appointed Associate Professor of Pharmacognosy at the University of Innsbruck. From 2001 to 2022, he served as Full Professor of Pharmacognosy (Pharmaceutical Biology) and Head of the Institute of Pharmacy/Pharmacognosy at the University of Innsbruck. Stuppner retired in September 2022.[3][4]
Research Contributions
editHermann Stuppner has conducted research in pharmacognosy and natural product chemistry, focusing on the isolation, structural elucidation, and pharmacological analysis of secondary metabolites from higher plants, including compounds with anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antiparasitic, and antitumor activity.
Approximately five percent of his more than 400 scientific publications focus on Leontopodium nivale (Edelweiss), a rare alpine plant used in traditional medicine.[5] Stuppner and his team identified the lignans leoligin and 5-methoxyleoligin from Edelweiss roots—compounds that have shown potential in treating cardiovascular diseases and preventing myocardial infarction.[6][7] He additionally investigated various traditional medicinal plants, such as Dracena cambodiana, Ferula hezarlalehzarica, Cicerbita alpina, Melodorum fruticosum, Silybum marianum, or Actaea racemosa, uncovering novel bioactive molecules with antiparasitic, antiinflammatory and antitumor effects in several of these species.[8][9][10][11][12] He has contributed to the development and validation of analytical methods for the quality control of herbal medicines.[13]
Stuppner served as the coordinator of the Austrian national research network (NFN) “Drugs from Nature targeting Inflammation,” a six-year interdisciplinary project funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF). The project involved collaboration between academic institutions and industry partners to identify plant-derived compounds with potential anti-inflammatory effects for therapeutic use.[14] He initiated and contributed in several national, European, and Euregio research projects such as the EU project Medihealth, the aim of which was to discover active ingredients of food plants from the Mediterranean diet and other global sources to promote healthy ageing. He contributed to the FFG-funded project VascAgeNet – Vascular Ageing Network, a multidisciplinary initiative aimed at promoting vascular ageing as a measurable and modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular diseases.[1] His contribution with the knowledge in metabolomics, helped to established protocols for extraction of human fecal samples and subsequent measurement with both complementary techniques NMR and LC-MS.[15][16][17] The involvement in this network highlights the commitment to translational research that bridges molecular pharmacognosy and preventive cardiovascular medicine. In 2013, one of these projects was awarded Austria’s prestigious Houska Prize for applied research.[18][19][4]
Academic and Scientific Service
editStuppner served for 18 years as Dean of Studies at the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy at the University of Innsbruck, contributed in curriculum development, accreditation, and quality assurance. He also served as head of the Department of Pharmacognosy and subsequently as deputy head of the Institute of Pharmacy until his retirement.[20]
Outside of his university duties, he held roles in scientific organizations. Since 2006, he has been serving as the founding president of the Herbal Medicinal Products Platform Austria (HMPPA)[21][2]. He also served eight years as president of the Austrian Pharmaceutical Society (ÖPhG), continuing as a board member afterward.[22] Additionally, he contributed to advisory boards, review panels, and scientific societies across Europe and supported standardization efforts including contributions to the European Pharmacopoeia.[20][23][24]
