Anna Huskee Armstrong Powers (born November 27, 1991), known professionally as Huskee, is an American multidisciplinary visual artist based in California. Her work spans abstract painting and horror-themed mixed media drawing. Active in the art scene since the early 2010s, she is known for her expressive use of watercolor and acrylic, as well as her role in promoting young artists through collective and community-driven initiatives.
Early Life and Education
Huskee was born on November 27, 1991, and grew up on the Eastern Coast of the United States. She attended an art-focused high school in Vermont, where she began refining her artistic skills. In 2010, she enrolled at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore, Maryland, where she studied illustration, fine art, and graphic design.
Career
Huskee began drawing in childhood and expanded her practice during her teenage years to include abstract painting. Her favored mediums are watercolor and acrylic, which she uses to explore themes ranging from emotion and abstraction to surrealism and horror.
In 2011, she founded Whisky Kettle Collectives, an artist collective featuring work from 14 artists. The collective included an online store, blog, and YouTube channel, and served as a platform to promote emerging artists through merchandise such as graphic t-shirts, prints, and posters. The collective also hosted gallery shows and events in Baltimore, Maryland, often in collaboration with local musicians. Whisky Kettle Collectives became a recognized brand among MICA students and the local art community before its closure in 2014 due to funding limitations.
In 2024, Huskee launched her own brand, Huskee Art, building on lessons from her earlier collective. The brand offers prints and original art, and expects to release posters, stickers, magnets, stationery, stamps, and apparel in the near future.
Her mural work has been featured in various cities, including New York City, Fairfield County, Connecticut, and Northern California. In 2024, she was selected as one of 16 artists to produce a large public mural, which was featured in Mark Makers’ Quarterly magazine and is currently on display in Art Alley, in the SOFA Arts District of Santa Rosa, California.
Style and Themes
Huskee’s work blends abstraction with narrative and often incorporates surreal or horror-inspired imagery. Her style draws visual influence from Tim Burton, Basil Gogos, and Vincent van Gogh, merging expressive linework and bold color with fantastical or eerie subject matter.
Recurring themes in her artwork include skeletons, the living dead, graffiti-style abstraction, and colorful abstract compositions. Her paintings often explore contrasts—between chaos and structure, vibrancy and decay—expressed through mixed media techniques and a vivid, gestural style. Over time, her work has evolved to incorporate more layered compositions and narrative elements, while retaining a strong emphasis on emotional expression and visual experimentation.
Legacy
Through her work and collective efforts, Huskee has contributed to fostering community among young and emerging artists. Her dedication to collaborative practice and art accessibility is a defining aspect of her career.
