Janakpur Bolts (JB; Nepali: जनकपुर बोल्ट्स) is a Nepalese professional cricket franchise based in Janakpur, Madhesh Province. The team competes in the Nepal Premier League (NPL) and was one of the eight franchise incorporated in 2024.[1] Their home ground is the Shree Ram Janaki International Cricket Stadium and is owned by Dream Sports Pvt Ltd. Janakpur Bolts won the inaugural season of Nepal Premier League after defeating the Sudur Paschim Royals by five wickets in the final at the Tribhuvan University International Cricket Ground in Kirtipur.[2]

Anil Sah, Aasif Sheikh and Lalit Rajbanshi were the standout players of this team. [3] New Zealand Cricketer James Neesham was also the attraction for Janakpur Bolts in the first season of NPL.[4]

History

In January 2024, the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) announced that the inaugural season of the Nepal Premier League would take place in November and December 2024.[5][6][7] On 2 August 2024, CAN issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) for franchise ownership. The Janakpur based franchise was sold to Dream Sports Pvt Ltd for NPR 2.05 crore (US$130,000).[8][9]

2024 season

The Bolts made their debut in the 2024 Nepal Premier League. They had a best debut season, wining inaugural season with seven wins from ten matches.

On 30 November 2024, they played their first ever match in NPL history against Biratnagar Kings and won by 8 wickets at the Tribhuvan University International Cricket Ground.[10][11] Two days later, they defeated Karnali Yaks by 8 wickets, securing second consecutive win in NPL.[12] After that, they won back to back matches against Pokhara Avengers by 7 wickets[13] and, low scoring thriller against Lumbini Lions by 1 runs.[14] In that match, Harsh Thaker took the franchise's first five wicket haul, guiding the team to their fourth consecutive victory.[15]

The team recorded their first major loss on 11 December 2024, against Sudurpaschim Royals, making lowest total in NPL history.[16] Immediately after the first loss, they bounce back by defeating Kathmandu Gurkhas by 5 wickets and became the first team to reach the playoff in NPL.[17][18][19] However, they summed up their league stage in loosing note against Chitwan Rhinos by 32 runs.[20]

In Qualifier 1, they once again lost to Sudhurpaschim Royals by 8 wickets, making them first team in NPL to reach finals.[21] After that, they won qualifier 2 against Karnali Yaks by 2 wickets and reaches the final.[22] On 21 December, Janakpur Bolts won the inaugural season of Nepal Premier League after defeating the Sudur Paschim Royals by five wickets in the final.[23] The team’s victory was led by Lahiru Milantha, who scored 87 runs off 49 balls, and strong bowling performances from Kishore Mahato and Mohammad Mohsin, who took three wickets each. The Janakpur Bolts successfully chased a target of 185 runs in 19.2 overs.[24]

In this season, Lahiru Milantha became the leading run scorer of the franchise, and overall leading run scorer of the season.[25] Lalit Rajbanshi became franchise leading wicket taker, and overall leading wicket taker of the season.[26]

Crest and colours

The logo consists of the famous Janaki Mandir dedicated to the Hindu goddess Sita representing history, religion and culture with Thunder sign at two bottom corner and the team name rendered below in Pink and white with thunder sign of Bolts name. The team's primary colour is purple and pink.

Clothing manufacturing company DNA Fashion Nepal became the first shirt sponsor for the team in NPL 2024.[27]

The team has a significant fan following, colloquially referred to as the "Bolts Army". The team has the highest number of followers in the social media amongst the NPL teams with about 84 thousand followers across X, Facebook and Instagram as of December 2024.

Ownership

When the NPL was launched in 2024, the Janakpur franchise was sold to the Dream Sports Pvt Ltd for रू2.05 crore (US$150,000), making it the third most expensive team in the league.[28][29]
