MacSailing is a sailing school based at the Jericho Sailing Centre in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Founded in 1999, it has grown into the largest recreational sailing school in Canada, operating a fleet of more than 120 dinghies along with keelboats and canoes.[1][2][3] The school offers youth camps, adult courses, private lessons, tours, and rentals, and runs one of Western Canada’s stronger youth race teams.[4]
History
editMacSailing was established in 1999 with the aim of making sailing more accessible to the Vancouver community.[3] It began with small dinghy programs and expanded to include certification courses, racing development, and broader outdoor education.[1]
That same year, MacSailing launched its youth race team, which has since become one of the strongest racing programs in Western Canada.[4] The team regularly competes in regional regattas and has produced sailors who compete internationally or pursue sailing instruction careers.[4]
Programs
editMacSailing runs seasonal programs that cater to different ages and skill levels. Youth camps are offered throughout the summer, introducing children and teenagers to sailing and providing pathways through CANSail levels 1 to 4, as well as racing and complementary activities such as canoeing and marine ecology.[4] Adult programs include introductory and advanced sailing courses in dinghies and keelboats, private instruction, and certification in areas such as the Basic Cruising Standard.[1]
The school also offers customized private lessons and sailing tours, including multi-day liveaboard experiences on a 31-foot Beneteau sailboat.[1] For larger groups, MacSailing organizes corporate events and school programs that combine sailing with team-building or outdoor education. Rental services provide access to dinghies, catamarans, canoes, and other small boats on an hourly basis.[2]
Facilities and Fleet
editMacSailing operates out of the Jericho Sailing Centre on English Bay.[3] The school maintains a fleet of more than 120 dinghies, including RS Zests, 420s, Lasers, Hobie catamarans, Optimists (Optis), and Escapes, as well as keelboats used for cruising instruction.[4] Canoes are also part of the fleet, supporting both camp programming and rental services.[4] In addition, a fleet of rigid-hulled inflatable boats (RHIBs) is used by instructors as coach and safety boats.[3]
Partnerships and Community
editMacSailing has collaborated with a variety of local organizations, schools, and community groups on sailing and outdoor education initiatives.[3]
Regattas and Racing
editSince its founding in 1999, MacSailing has operated a youth race team.[4] Over that time, it has developed into one of the stronger sailing teams in Western Canada.[4] Alumni have gone on to compete internationally and to work as sailing instructors with MacSailing and other programs around the world.[4]
Each year, the team trains regularly and participates in regattas throughout the region, including events hosted by local clubs and sailing associations.[4]
