Mitchell P. Nowakowski (born 1991) is an American politician currently serving as the Fillmore District representative on the Buffalo Common Council. First elected in 2019, Nowakowski is the youngest member, as well as the Council's first openly gay man.

Early Life and Education

Nowakowski was born and raised in Orchard Park, New York. He became involved in politics as a teenager, working on campaigns with his early mentor and former Orchard Park supervisor Janis Colarusso.

At twenty-one, Nowakowski moved to the City of Buffalo studied at Erie Community College before earning a bachelor’s degree in urban planning and political science from Buffalo State University.[1]

Early Career

After graduating from Buffalo State University, Nowakowski worked as an intern and an aide in the office of Niagara District Council Member David A. Rivera.[2] He later became a legislative assistant with the Common Council's central staff.

In 2019, Nowakowski ran for the Fillmore District Council seat on the Buffalo Common Council, vacated by longtime member David Franczyk.[3] He won a four-way Democratic primary and went on to defeat three more opponents in the general election.[4] In 2023, he was reelected to another four-year term.[5]

Housing and Preservation

Nowakowski has been an advocate for addressing Buffalo's vacant and abandoned properties, pushing for stronger accountability measures in housing court and supporting efforts to stabilize and rehabilitate historic structures.[6] He has spoken out about the importance of adaptive reuse and historic preservation, including projects in Buffalo's Cobblestone District[7], Allentown[8], and Downtown Buffalo[9].
