Muhammad Ali Imran is a Pakistani-British academic who is Professor of Communication Systems at the University of Glasgow.[1] He serves as Dean of Graduate Studies and Transnational Engineering Education at the James Watt School of Engineering and leads the Communications, Sensing and Imaging (CSI) research hub.[2]

Career

Imran has led and contributed to major research projects in wireless communication systems, including 5G and 6G networks.[3] He was part of the team leading the UK’s flagship 6G initiatives CHEDDAR and JOINER, which received over £40 million in UK government and UKRI funding to explore future communication systems.[4]

His work has also extended into digital health. He was involved in the development of a "radar stethoscope" capable of remotely detecting heart sounds, a project that has been featured as part of precision medicine research in the UK.[5]

In addition, Imran has worked on rural connectivity and frugal networking solutions, contributing to UK-wide initiatives aimed at addressing digital inclusion.[6]

Public Engagement

Imran has been interviewed in industry forums about the evolution of next-generation wireless systems, including a public Q&A on “What does 6G mean to you?” hosted by the Royal Academy of Engineering’s Free6GTraining initiative.[7]

He has also delivered invited talks at international events and media forums, including discussions on 5G as a transformative technology.[8]

Imran is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (FRSE),[9] a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (FIEEE),[10] and a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (FIET).[11]
