Comment: As you may already know, only reliable sources must be used on Wikipedia. This does not meet the general notability guidelines because ImDB is not a reliable sources. A listing on a website meant to sell these is not reliable or independent either. Also 'Unleash the Fanboy' doesn't seem very reliable. Please ensure that the article covers more than just the plot of the episode. If you can not find sources to make it meet the general notability guidelines, then you could consider putting the plot summary in List of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic episodes. "Scare Master" is the twenty-first episode of the fifth season of the animated television series My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. The episode was written by Natasha Levinger and directed by Denny Lu. It originally aired on Discovery Family on October 31, 2015. In this episode, Fluttershy tries to overcome her fear of Nightmare Night and participate in the holiday celebrations with her friends.
Plot
editOn Nightmare Night, Fluttershy prepares to avoid the holiday by hiding in her cottage with her animal friends, as she does every year. However, when Angel Bunny requests carrots and refuses other food, Fluttershy must go outside and get some. As she makes her way through Ponyville, she becomes frightened by the decorations and celebrations, and sees Big McIntosh and Granny Smith collecting hay for the Apple family haunted corn maze. Granny Smith talks about some of the maze's attractions, causing Fluttershy to run away in fear.
While searching for food for Angel, Fluttershy arrives at Twilight Sparkle's castle, where Spike encourages her to join her friends for Nightmare Night. Inside the castle, the Mane Six are sharing spooky stories. Fluttershy enters and agrees to join them. At the Carousel Boutique, Rarity helps Fluttershy pick out a costume, and she chooses a simple black dress. Her friends, also in costume, bring her to Sugarcube Corner for games and activities.
Fluttershy's intense fears prevent her from enjoying the party. She begins to feel embarrassed for being scared but Twilight suggests Fluttershy should be the one doing the scaring instead. Excited by the idea, Fluttershy returns to her cottage for preparations. When her friends arrive, none of Fluttershy's plans turn out to be scary. Though they appreciate her effort, they are not frightened. Fluttershy realizes that she is not right for Nightmare Night and tells her friends to go have fun without her.
Angel Bunny encourages Fluttershy to try again. Meanwhile, Twilight and her friends enter the Apple family’s corn maze, only to experience unexpected and terrifying events, including ghostly apparitions that chase them through the maze. Eventually, they fall into a hole and become trapped inside. Then Applejack discovers a mummified skeleton resembling Granny Smith, seated in a rocking chair, causing the group to scream and run away. Applejack admits that she has no idea what is happening, as they were not part of her family’s planned maze. Suddenly, a giant monstrous creature appears and begins to chase the ponies through the tunnel. They become caught in a sticky spider web, but Twilight frees them using teleportation, allowing them to escape. The ponies reach the end of the tunnel, where they encounter Fluttershy dressed as Flutterbat. Seeing how terrified the ponies are, Fluttershy drops the act and apologizes for scaring them, revealing that she had help from her animal friends and Granny Smith to make the maze scarier. The ponies are impressed that Fluttershy was able to create such a frightening experience. Although she found a way to participate in Nightmare Night, Fluttershy admits that she does not enjoy seeing her friends in danger, even if the danger is not real. Fluttershy returns to her cottage and spends the rest of Nightmare Night with her animal friends in the hiding spot under her bed, as she previously planned.
Cultural references
editThe cardboard cutouts in Fluttershy’s house are based on anime characters. From left to right, they are Usagi Tsukino from Sailor Moon, Rei Ayanami from Neon Genesis Evangelion, Utena Tenjou from Revolutionary Girl Utena, Bulma from the Dragon Ball franchise, and Ranma Saotome from Ranma ½.[citation needed] The scene where Applejack finds a mummified skeleton resembling Granny Smith sitting in a rocking chair is a reference to the reveal of Norma Bates' corpse from Psycho, directed by Alfred Hitchcock.[citation needed] A stallion in the Apple family’s corn maze is dressed as Jason Voorhees from the Friday the 13th horror franchise.[citation needed]
Reception
editAccording to Equestria Daily, "Scare Master" received 395,000 viewers, compared to 382,000 viewers for the previous episode, "Hearthbreakers."[1] On IMDb, the episode has a rating of 7.9/10.[2] Daniel Alvarez of Unleash the Fanboy felt that Fluttershy’s extreme fear was somewhat exaggerated, but praised the heartfelt interactions between Fluttershy and Spike, as well as Natasha Levinger’s strong character writing.[3]
