Sukhdev Toor is a Canadian businessman, hotelier, and philanthropist[1][2]. He is the founder, president, and chief executive officer of Manga Hotel Group, a privately held hospitality investment and management company headquartered in Toronto, Ontario.

Early Life and Education

A Sikh Canadian originally from Punjab, India, Toor immigrated to Ontario, Canada as an engineer in the 1980s and studied for an MBA at the University of Waterloo[3]. He holds a degree in civil engineering[4][5] and has applied his technical background to innovative hotel design and development. He entered the hospitality industry after purchasing his first motel in St. Catharines, Ontario in 1987 and began building the Manga Hotel Group[3][6].

Career

Toor’s strategic vision and risk-taking fueled rapid expansion throughout the 1990s[3]. He built Manga Hotel Group from a single property to an empire that owns and operates over 31 hotels and approximately 6,000 rooms[3], with additional projects in progress. Notably, he built the first Hampton Inn in Canada and Canada’s first LEED-certified hotel[7][8], reflecting his commitment to sustainability and innovation in real estate[3]. Toor is recognized for pioneering achievements, including introducing the first Hilton-branded hotel properties in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia which he built[9][10]. Manga Hotel Group maintains a vertically integrated business model that covers land acquisition, construction, hotel operations, and property management.

Manga Hotel Group is affiliated with flagship brands such as Hilton, Marriott, Hyatt, and InterContinental Hotel Group, and also develops residential and commercial properties throughout Canada and the United States[11]. The company’s growth strategy is based on data-driven decision-making and embracing new technologies for operational excellence[3][12].

Over the course of his career, Toor has built 16 hotels from the ground up and developed independent hotels including the namesake TOOR Hotel Toronto[13][14], SoHo 54 Hotel in New York City[15], the Atlantica Hotel Halifax[16] and The Hollis Halifax[9]. In addition to hotel construction, Toor has also constructed multiple purpose built rental residential buildings[8][12][17].

Philanthropy

Toor is active in philanthropic initiatives. He established the Toor Family Foundation[25] which is focused on promoting health, wellness, art, and culture. The foundation has made significant contributions, including a $1 million donation to the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) and a $1 million donation to the Royal Ontario Museum.[3][1]
