History

edit

1974–1980

edit

The company was founded in 1974 as LHG kanalfläkt. Systemair's first product was a fan with round connections installed directly in the duct system (duct fan), which simplified the installation considerably. Production began in Skinnskatteberg; by the end of the decade, 50% of production was being carried out in a partner facility in Norway. The first sales subsidiary, LHG Kanavapuhallin, was established in Finland.[8]

1980–1990

edit

Production of Metsovent, the first residential unit with heat recovery, starts in Skinnskatteberg.[9]

German manufacturer of fan motors ZIEHL-ABEGG and ebm-papst were suppliers, then became partners through their Swedish subsidiary Ziehl-ebm. Today, ebm-papst AB is Systemair’s second-largest shareholder[10].

In 1987, Systemair acquired 50% of shares in RB Kanalfläkt, USA; the remaining 50% was acquired in 2001/2002.

1990–2000

edit

This decade began with the acquisition of Frico AB[11], a specialist in air curtains and fan heaters, followed by the acquisition of Enviroment Air, Canada, as well as a factory in Bouctouche (Canada) as a production facility for the North American market.[12]

Other notable events in this time period include:

  • Acquisition of SCIE Systemair, previously sales agent in France.
  • Acquisition of Europair in Södertälje, Swedish manufacturer of air terminal devices.

2000-2010

edit

Notable events include:

  • New distribution centre established in Skinnskatteberg[13]
  • New production facility established in Lithuania[14]
  • Establishment of sales subsidiaries and companies in Turkey, Hong Kong, Hungary, Belgium, Romania, South Africa, Ireland, United Arab Emirates, Spain, and India
  • Systemair awarded the Great Export Award by the Swedish Trade Council[15]
  • Systemair listed on the Nasdaq OMX Stockholm index[16]

2010-2020

edit

In February 2011, founder Gerald Engström was awarded H.M. the King's Medal, 12th size with the ribbon of the Order of the Seraphim, for outstanding contributions to Swedish business.

Roland Kasper was appointed as the new CEO of the Systemair Group in 2015.[17] At the Annual Meeting, Gerald Engström was elected as new Chairman of the Board.[18]

The Swedish business was divided into two companies. The company Systemair AB became a streamlined holding company with corporate staff and group functions. The newly formed company Systemair Sverige AB conducts production and sales operations in Sweden.[19]

2020-2030

edit

On January 3, 2022, Systemair moves to Nasdaq Stockholm's Large Cap segment.[20]

Systemair entered into an agreement with Panasonic Corporation's Heating & Ventilation A/C Company intending to divest the air-conditioning business, to sell all outstanding shares in Systemair S.r.l, and Tecnair S.p.A in Italy, and in due course the business conducted by the air-conditioning sales employees in Systemair GmbH in Germany. The agreement was completed on March 1, 2023.[21]

Systemair then acquired UK-based SCS Engineering Ltd, and its subsidiary Smoke Control Services Ltd, together Group SCS[22]. Group SCS is a UK-based leader in smoke control solutions for residential and commercial buildings.

In 2024, Systemair acquired the aggregates manufacturer PHEM Engineering SDN. BHD. in Malaysia. PHEM Engineering is a manufacturer of air handling units and fans for commercial applications with sales in South East Asia and Australia. [23]

Systemair decides to close Menerga's production in Muelheim an der Ruhr, Germany, in 2024.[24] The factory manufactured high-efficiency ventilation units for swimming pools, water parks and low-energy buildings. As a result, Systemair's existing facility in Maribor, Slovenia increased production of Menerga's products.[25]

Participation in global events and industry associations

edit

Systemair was one of the sponsors of the Swedish pavilion at the Expo 2020 site in Dubai (UAE), where the company introduced the air conditioning and ventilation solutions for the building named ‘The Forest’, allowing them “to highlight the role ventilation and air conditioning plays in saving energy, protecting the planet while providing a healthy indoor environment for ourselves and future generations.”[26]

Systemair has a rich history of actively participating in industry associations. Raul Corredera Haener, Senior Director from Systemair, was elected President of Eurovent during the 65th General Assembly. Systemair was also among the founding members of Eurovent Middle East, which was formed in 2017, and Brian Suggitt, then Middle East Managing Director, was elected as the first chairman.[27] Systemair was the first manufacturer to certify products under the new Eurovent programme for residential air handling units (RAHU).[28]

Systemair is also active in the Air Movement and Control Association (AMCA) International.[29] In 1996, Systemair’s laboratory in Skinnskatteberg, Sweden, became one of Europe’s first AMCA-accredited laboratories for testing fans for air performance and sound and for the air curtains for air performance, velocity uniformity and velocity projection.[30] Since then, Systemair has added three more AMCA-accredited laboratories to its portfolio. This includes a laboratory for air performance testing in Windischbuch, Germany, a laboratory for testing air performance and sound in Greater Noida, India, and another laboratory for testing air performance and sound in Lenexa, USA[31].
