Tarek Sayed Tawfik (born February 28, 1971) is an Egyptian Egyptologist and Full Professor at Cairo University. He served as Director General of the Grand Egyptian Museum Project from 2014 to 2019 and is the President of the International Association of Egyptologists.
Early life and education
editTawfik earned his BA and MA in Egyptology at Cairo University’s Faculty of Archaeology and completed his PhD in Egyptology at the University of Bonn, Germany.[1]
Academic and professional career
editDr. Tawfik was promoted to Full Professor at Cairo University in 2025. He directed the Grand Egyptian Museum during a key phase in its development, overseeing the transfer and conservation of more than 40,000 artifacts, including the complete Tutankhamun collection.[2] In 2019, he was elected as Vice President of the International Association of Egyptologists (IAE) and in 2023 he was nominated President of the Association. Dr. Tawfik is the first Egyptian President elected to the International Association of Egyptologists. He serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Egyptian Archaeology and is active with ICOM Egypt and other international heritage organizations.

Legacy and family
editProf. Dr. Tarek Sayed Tawfik is the son of the late Prof. Sayed Tawfik Ahmed (c. 1936–1990), who served as Dean of the Faculty of Archaeology at Cairo University and as Chairman of the Egyptian Antiquities Organization until his passing. His father was a prominent Egyptologist known for his work at Saqqara and leadership in national heritage preservation.[7]
