Vanlallawmzuala Varte (born c. 1990), also known as Lza Varte, is an Indian long-distance cyclist and environmental advocate from Mizoram. He became the first person from Mizoram to complete a solo cycling expedition across all states and Union Territories of India, covering more than 17,000 kilometres to raise awareness for clean air and sustainable living[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15]. This feat was recognized by the India Book of Records and widely covered in national and regional media[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][10][11][13].
Early life
editVarte hails from Mission Veng, Aizawl, Mizoram[1][3][4][16][6]. He has been active in the Mission Veng Youth Adventure Club and serves as a leader in the Mizoram Cycling Association, promoting cycling and environmental issues[1][3][16][6][10][11].
Ride to Clean Air
editOn 25 January 2024, Varte began his solo campaign "Ride to Clean Air" to promote awareness about air quality and the Indian government's Mission LiFE programme[2][3][4][5][16][17][6][7][8][9][10][12][13]. Sponsored by the Mizoram Pollution Control Board, he rode through every Indian state and Union Territory[1][2][3][4][5][17][6][7][8][10][11].
Varte completed 17,045 km in 286 days, traversing challenging terrains including Umling La Pass in Ladakh, the world's highest motorable road[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][10][11][14]. His longest single-day ride was 207.82 km, and he reached a top speed of 68.8 km/h[1][2][3][7][14]. Throughout his expedition, he delivered talks at schools, planted trees, and organized awareness events in collaboration with state agencies and community groups[4][5][7][8][10][11][12][13][14].
Recognition
editVarte's achievement earned him certification from the India Book of Records for the shortest time to visit all states and Union Territories on a bicycle to promote awareness of air pollution, and the highest elevation gained by a cyclist for this cause[1][2][18][3][4][6][7][8][11][14].
