Jakarta Data - Notability

edit

Hello!

Jakarta Data is a new specification for Jakarta EE that was just introduced for Jakarta EE 11 and since the other specifications have a page it seemed appropriate to try to set one up for Jakarta Data as well to try to help people find the right information to use it.

Here are 3 sources to (hopefully) satisfy the notability requirements:

1. "10 Ways Jakarta EE 11 Modernizes Enterprise Java", Payara Blog, 10 February 2025 – Highlights Jakarta Data 1.0 as a key enhancement in Jakarta EE 11. Details its repository pattern, JDQL support, pagination options, and integration with Jakarta Persistence and Jakarta NoSQL. https://blog.payara.fish/10-ways-jakarta-ee-11-modernizes-enterprise-development

2. "Jakarta EE 11 Platform Released with New Data Specification and Java 21 Support", Application Development Trends (ADTMag), 30 June 2025 – Industry news coverage presenting Jakarta Data as the central new feature of Jakarta EE 11. Describes its repository API, pagination support, and its role in simplifying data interactions for enterprise developers. https://adtmag.com/articles/2025/06/30/jakarta-ee-11-platform-released-with-new-data-specification-and-java-21-support.aspx

3. "Jakarta EE 11 Delivers One New Specification, 16 Updated Specifications, and New Java 21 Support", InfoQ, 1 July 2025 – Independent technology news coverage identifying Jakarta Data 1.0 as the sole new specification in Jakarta EE 11. Explains its unified repository interface approach, JDQL querying, and mentions implementations in Hibernate ORM, Eclipse JNoSQL, and Open Liberty. https://www.infoq.com/news/2025/07/jakarta-ee-11-updates/ Excentrickristy (talk) 13:28, 13 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Excentrickristy: Thanks for posting the sources here!
Unfortunately these would not satisfy the notability requirements for an article. What we are looking for is 3 independent, secondary sources that cover the topic in depth, in reliable mainstream media sources (think, e.g., coverage in something like Forbes, New York Times, Ars Technica, etc.); I usually look for sources posted on the table at WP:Perennial sources. Your first source is a blog post, so it is primary. The second in ADTMag is OK coverage, but I am not sure whether ADTMag is reliable. The third source is a passing mention for Jakarta Data, not in-depth coverage.
My best assessment is that the topic is likely not notable for inclusion on Wikipedia. What I would recommend is that you could consider adding a mention of Jakarta Data on another page, such as Java version history instead. The sources you list, while not enough to support a standalone article, can still be used to support a mention of the topic on a different page. I hope that is helpful, let me know if you have any questions! Caleb Stanford (talk) 16:51, 27 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
Oh one other thing - please note that using AI to generate talk page messages is not allowed on Wikipedia. I don't know for sure that you used AI, it is just a hunch though based on the way you summarized the sources. We want to communicate with you, not an AI! :) Kind regards, Caleb Stanford (talk) 16:53, 27 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
Hi @Caleb Stanford
My apologies, I did use ChatGPT to summarize the links I found as I'm not an expert on the subject myself, just trying to submit an article that our experts wrote! I'm a little confused still about why the threshold for notability is so high for this specification when many other Jakarta specifications have their own pages while primarily referring to primary sources.
Example:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jakarta_Annotations
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jakarta_Enterprise_Beans
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jakarta_Faces
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jakarta_Mail
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jakarta_Messaging
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jakarta_Persistence
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jakarta_Server_Pages
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jakarta_Transactions
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jakarta_Web_Services_Metadata
It's not really a subject that Forbes would write about but there seems to be an established precedent within Wikipedia for treating individual Jakarta EE specifications as notable? Or is there something about these specs that make them more notable than others? I'm just trying to understand because we were hoping to create a few new specification pages to provide people with the proper references and resources.
Thanks again!

Hi Kristy - that's a reasonable question. It's most likely that many of those other articles should be deleted (or will be deleted by editors in the future) - assuming no reliable coverage can be found. The relevant policy here is WP:GNG which is a list of 5 bullets that is worth reading. Note that just because an article on a topic exists, doesn't necessarily mean it meets GNG, as the enforcement mechanisms for article creation have not always been as consistent (e.g., editors could just the article in the past without going through AfC). Taking your first article as an example, Jakarta Annotations, it's currently supported only by three primary sources (Java EE documentation itself), so it doesn't meet WP:GNG as written, and would be rejected. I hope that helps clarify. Caleb Stanford (talk) 01:46, 28 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
