This is a template for linking to entries in the Historic American Buildings Survey database on the Library of Congress website. Sample usage is as follows:

 {{HABS |survey=MD-1167 |id=md1633 |title=Evergreen |photos=146 |color=16 |dwgs=30 |data=233 |cap=9}}

Required parameters:

  • survey. The "Survey Number" from the HABS database entry. Always consists of a two-letter state abbreviation (all upper case) followed by a hyphen and one or more numbers. Subsidiary structures on a common site may have a second hyphen followed by one or more letters. (Some older HABS surveys have numbers instead of letters after the second hyphen.)
  • id. The last six digits from the "Bookmark This Record" link given in the HABS database entry. Always consists of a two-letter state abbreviation (all lower case) followed by four numbers.
  • title. The "Title" from the HABS database entry. You may include only the name of the structure and omit any subsequent information about ___location, etc. This parameter is not required when the template is used in "short" mode.

Optional parameters:

  • photos. The number of photos listed in the HABS database entry.
  • color. The number of color transparencies listed in the HABS database entry.
  • dwgs. The number of measured drawings listed in the HABS database entry.
  • data. The number of data pages listed in the HABS database entry. Note that the database will typically display a "Data Pages" box, even if no data pages are listed, because this is the hard copy record cover sheet; the cover sheet does not count as a data page.
  • cap. The number of photo caption pages listed in the HABS database entry.
  • supp. Set to "yes" if supplemental material is shown in the HABS database entry.

Control parameters:

  • link. Set to "no" for subsequent instances of this template on the same page; this will shorten the output from "Historic American Buildings Survey" to "HABS" and avoid overlinking.
  • short. Set to "yes" for a highly abbreviated external link, displaying the survey number only, for use in tabular lists.

This template is for Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) entries only; use {{HALS}} and {{HAER}} for the other collections created by Heritage Documentation Programs.
