Template talk:Colored box
Need (?) and lint error
editTomybrz, Elias Ziade, Danidamiobi: I suspect that this template is not needed and that other templates already do what this template does. If that is the case, pages that use it should use other templates and this template should be deleted. If this template really offers something new, it needs to be fixed to avoid causing div-span-flip lint errors whenever the title parameter is centered. Perhaps all <span>...</span>
tags can be replaced with <div>...</div>
tags. I don't want to get involved beyond that. I came here because of the lint errors in Draft:Portal:African cinema; if anyone fixes the lint errors there without modifying this template, the specific version I saw is the version of 15:22, 7 October 2022 (UTC). —Anomalocaris (talk) 07:03, 9 October 2022 (UTC)
- Hi @Anomalocaris,
- Thanks a lot for paying attention. I did not even notice there were errors and trust me, I would not have created a new template if there was any that suited what I was trying to achieve. Danidamiobi (talk) 07:16, 9 October 2022 (UTC)
- Danidamiobi: Kindly fix this problem; there are only two pages in all of English Wikipedia with div-span-flip lint errors, one of them is Draft:Portal:African cinema, caused by this template. –Anomalocaris (talk) 18:22, 12 October 2022 (UTC)
- I'll work on it and feed you back shortly. Danidamiobi (talk) 19:10, 14 October 2022 (UTC)
- Danidamiobi: It's been 1,024 days. There are 47 pages transcluding this template. There are now 163 div-span-flip lint errors in English Wikipedia, all of them caused by this template. Please fix it. Please get help if you need it. —Anomalocaris (talk) 20:45, 1 August 2025 (UTC)
- Waddie96, Izno: I see you two edited this template today. Chances are Danidamiobi did fix it and one of you two messed it up. Will someone please fix the div-span-flip lint errors attributable to centering the title not working properly? —Anomalocaris (talk) 21:04, 1 August 2025 (UTC)
- Kinda sorta my fault. Izno (talk) 21:17, 1 August 2025 (UTC)
- Izno: Thank you for taking care of this. As a result, there are no div-span-flip lint errors in English Wikipedia. I have moved the issue of centering to a new topic. —Anomalocaris (talk) 22:13, 1 August 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks for the great work you do @Anomalocaris! Danidamiobi (talk) 22:30, 1 August 2025 (UTC)

Pre on multi-line content
editWhen |content=
spans multiple line, the template breaks down and puts the first one in a pre. Seen from WP:CVU. I fixed the Questions and Discussions boxes by putting it on a single line, but it can't be done for mediawiki lists or wikitables. — Alien333 (what I did & why I did it wrong) 19:04, 27 May 2024 (UTC)
- Answering myself: it's fixed. It was due to a space before the content that was there for indentation, but the newline before had to be there for wikitables to work. — Alien333 (what I did & why I did it wrong) 19:07, 27 May 2024 (UTC)
Center doesn't work
editDanidamiobi: The documentation says that the title can be centered with center
. It doesn't work, viz:
Content
Content
Please either enable the center parameter or change the documentation to agree with the way the template works. —Anomalocaris (talk) 22:08, 1 August 2025 (UTC)
- Yikes. I had issues getting it to centralize. Do you think I should make it centered by default or leave it as it was and remove center from the doc?. Danidamiobi (talk) 23:12, 1 August 2025 (UTC)
- Remove centred... waddie96 ★ (talk) 00:27, 2 August 2025 (UTC)

- I'm not understanding what you are requesting here. Please make your changes to Template:Colored box/sandbox/styles.css and reactivate. * Pppery * it has begun... 14:53, 10 August 2025 (UTC)
- Sorry but I cannot get sandbox to work............. help? I made border red and nothing changes so it has got to be the implementation. waddie96 ★ (talk) 18:36, 10 August 2025 (UTC)
- Since you call the main template (including its stylesheet) and the sandbox on the same page the CSS for the main template overrides the CSS for the sandbox since it's after it. Try not calling {{Colored box}} on the same page as you're doing your tests. * Pppery * it has begun... 04:26, 11 August 2025 (UTC)

Why did you template protect?
editHey @Pppery I forgot to ask but why did you template-protect this template? Because if it's because it appears on a fully-protected page is not good enough of a reason. Check out WP:NO-PREEMPT:
Applying page protection solely as a preemptive measure is contrary to the open nature of Wikipedia and is generally not allowed. Instead, protection is used when vandalism, disruption, or abuse by multiple users is occurring at a frequency that warrants protection. The duration of protection should be as short as possible and at the lowest protection level sufficient to stop the disruption, allowing edits from as many productive users as possible.
Please remove the protection to Template:Colored box and Template:Colored box/styles.css. waddie96 ★ (talk) 20:00, 19 August 2025 (UTC)
- High-risk templates are an explicit exception to WP:NO-PREEMPT. And I see this as analagous to
The most common reasons a template or module is considered high-risk are [...] It is used in a permanently highly visible ___location (such as the Main page).
Finally,In contrast to our usual policy prohibiting preemptive protection, administrators are given wide latitude to use page protection in order to minimize the unique risks posed by the technical aspects of templates
. I will not be reducing the protection level; you are welcome to take it to WP:Requests for page protection/Decrease and see what others think. * Pppery * it has begun... 20:12, 19 August 2025 (UTC)- @Pppery I see no reason why it has to be template-protected though? That's a bit ridiculous. Can you reduce the protection to extended-confirmed? waddie96 ★ (talk) 21:54, 19 August 2025 (UTC)
- I decline. * Pppery * it has begun... 22:10, 19 August 2025 (UTC)
- @Pppery note I requested reduced page protection. waddie96 ★ (talk) 22:26, 19 August 2025 (UTC)
