Lake Bugondo is a swampy and shallow fresh water lake that is located in Serere District in the Eastern region of Uganda.[1] It is an extension of lake Kyoga.[2][3][4][5]

There are 46 fish species and these include;Lates niloticus (Nile Perch) that was introduced into the lake in 1950s, Mormyrus kanumme, Haplochromis microdon, Synodontis victoriae, Tilapia esculenta, Engraulicypris argentus, Tilapis variabilis, Barbus kiogae, Clarias mossambicus, Schilbe mystus, haplochromine cichlids.[4][6][7][8]

Conservation and human activity

The government of Uganda through the ministry of Water and Environment started irrigation scheme that included Owii and Kabos irrigation schemes with support from the UK Export. And the ministry usually does regular inspections of the irrigation schemes.[4] These irrigation schemes are equiped with pumps, alarm systems, taps and also electricity transmission lines.[4]

Human activities include; farming and agriculture, fishing and livestock keeping.[4] Farmers grow crops that include; tomatoes, onions, vegetables such as egg plants, sorghum, millet, cassava among other crops.[4][9]

Fish farming is one of the economic activities that are carried out by people. They construct fish ponds near the water bodies. And when flooding occurs, their fish usually joins the main water from lake Kyoga and its extensions.[10]
