In motorsport, the race director is the tournament director who is responsible for overseeing all operations relating to competitive racing. The position involves promoting safety for events and manages the response to incidents that occur during races.
Formula One
editIn Formula One, the race director is employed by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile. The race director is responsible for managing marshals, deploying safety cars, and coordinating, racing flags, and enforcing track limit violations.[1]
The position of full-time race director was first held by Roland Bruynseraede, who was appointed in 1988. Since then, there have been five other individuals who have held the position.

editIn American open-wheel racing, presently known as the IndyCar Series, the race director oversees race control, determines track conditions (including flags), and assists with penalties or other infractions.[9] The current race director for the series is Kyle Novak, who has held the position since 2018[10]. The previous race director was Brian Barnhart, who held the position several times between 1997 and 2015.[11]
World Endurance Championship
editEduardo Freitas is the current race director for the FIA World Endurance Championship, and has held the position since the series' creation in 2012.[12][13]
