51st state Wikipedia article.

Why you have chosen this article to evaluate?

edit

This article was the only one I found relating to a specific issue in American politics that had a C-level classification.

Content

edit
  • There is a section explaining the classification of U.S. Senate seats that a 51st state would receive that is only one sentence long. This could be expanded on or moved to a section where it could fit better.
  • There is a section dedicated to U.S. flag proposals. Information could be added on when a U.S. flag change officially occurs according to the law.
  • Most of the article's content focuses either on specific proposals of statehood or times a country has been described as the 51st state. Some sections are longer and more important to the article (such as the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, or Guam). Other sections are shorter and only have one or two sentences of information (such as the Dominican Republic or Denmark). More information could be added in shorter sections and information could be clarified in longer sections.

Sources and References

edit
  • Most sources are reliable. Most links checked still work.
  • Reference #83 is a Google Docs document that is no longer publicly available.
  • Reference #164 is a study on YouTube comments on the Canadian Prime Minister's briefings during the COVID-19 pandemic. The term "51st state" is only mentioned once in one comment with 180 likes and 34 replies ("We should not rely on the US, like we are the 51st state!"). A better source could be found to support the claim that it is a term used disparagingly in the United States, especially considering that the comment is implied to be from a Canadian user.
  • There are sections where sources could be seen as outdated. The source for Denmark being described as the "51st state" is a newspaper article from 1989 describing a 4th of July festival that occurs every year. A newer source could be found.

Organization and writing quality

edit
  • There are some instances where writing could be improved so it flows better or doesn't repeat.
    • This includes repeating sentences in the lead section ("though this has not happened in recent history" and "though, again, there have been no such moves in more than a century").
    • Some writing is not very consistent with the language used in the rest of the article. This can be seen in the section for legal requirements ("Once it becomes a State there are rules, it must for example write a State constitution and it must have sufficient financial and human resources to run its State government and support the Federal government").
  • The article has no major spelling errors.

Images and Media

edit
  • Nearly all images in the article are maps and flags of territories that have been proposed as potential 51st states.
  • These images are well-captioned and adhere to Wikipedia's copyright policies.
  • The article could be improved by adding photos of campaigns or supporters of a territory's statehood.

Talk page discussion

edit
  • There hasn't been any major discussions about this article in the past few years. Previous discussion topics include what would happen to the article if a 51st state is added and the shade of blue in U.S. flags.
  • The article is rated as C-class.
  • It is part of multiple different WikiProjects, including the United States, Politics, International Relations, Puerto Rico, Canada, and Greenland.

Overall impressions

edit
  • The article provides a significant amount of information on the topic, but it could be better organized or clarified.
