Jeffrey Wegener (b. 1955) is an Australian musician, who played drums in such bands as the Saints, The Last Words, and Laughing Clowns.
Career
editFollowing a short period as drummer for the Saints in Brisbane with Ed Kuepper, Jeffrey Wegener left the band in 1975.[1] He then joined one of Sydney's first punk bands The Last Words as an original member, but left again after only a few months.[2] Wegener next moved to Melbourne to join Young Charlatans with Rowland S. Howard and Ian ‘Ollie’ Olsen.[3]
After the Saints broke up, Ed Kuepper formed a new band in 1979 with Wegener, Bob Farrell and Ben Wallace-Crabbe, called Laughing Clowns.[4] After several tours and albums, they broke up in 1984 while recording their final album Ghosts Of An Ideal Wife.[3] Around this time, the Saints had reformed, and Wegener joined again as drummer in 1985,[5] after briefly sitting in for The Birthday Party.[6]
After some years struggling with addiction and spending some time in jail, Wegener returned to playing drums again in the early 2000s, and reunited with Kuepper again for a series of performances.[7][8] This led to the formation of a new trio, Kowalski Collective, with Peter Oxley, and the release of an album Jean Lee And The Yellow Dog in 2007.[9]
In 2019, Wegener performed as part of a duo with Australian jazz saxophonist Mark Simmonds, which would transpire to be Simmonds' last gig before he died.[10][11]
