History
editIndian hotel industry has been home grown with reputed national brands such as ITDC Hotels, Taj Hotels, Oberoi Hotels. In this landscape, Dr Vithal Kamat established the first ecotel : Orchid Hotels on 27 September 1997.[9]
In due course of time, Kamat family launched Kamat Hotels (India) Limited, to float the IRA by Orchid Hotels brand in June 2023 in Mumbai.[10] The aim was to target mid-market hotel segment which has tier-2 and tier-3 cities of India.[11] It was developed to move beyond luxury brand, The Orchid held by the company and also compete against the Ginger by IHCL and Red Fox of Lemon Tree Hotels.[12]
The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), through its National Committee on Tourism, works to promote the development and representation of the hotel industry in India.[13].According to The Economic Times , Vishal Kamat, Executive Director of Kamat Hotels (India) Ltd. (KHIL), was appointed Chairman of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Maharashtra, in recognition of the company's role in the mid-level segment of India's hotel industry.[13] He oversees the development and expansion of hospitality brands for Kamat Hotels (India) Ltd. (KHIL) across India.[14]
Operations
editKamat Hotels (India) Ltd. (KHIL) operates hospitality brands including The Orchid (ecotel hotels), Jadga Gadh,Mahodadhi Palace, Lotus Resorts and IRA by Orchid Hotels.[15]. The new hotel properties were opened under a leasing and revenue-sharing model, allowing Kamat Hotels to operate them without direct ownership of the assets.[1]This approach aligns with broader industry trends favouring asset-light strategies in the Indian hospitality sector.
Competitors in Industry
editThe mid-segment hotel market in India, defined by rooms priced between ₹2,000-₹5,000 per night, caters to middle-class travelers and has grown due to rising domestic tourism and urbanization.[17] Lemon Tree Hotels, a major chain, operates over 9,700 rooms across more than 100 properties as of early 2025, with sub-brands like Lemon Tree Premier and Red Fox targeting various mid-market customers.[18] IHCL’s Ginger, part of the Indian Hotels Company Limited, manages around 4,000-5,000 rooms and focuses on standardized accommodations, with plans to expand to 400 hotels by 2030.[19] Kamat Hotels’ IRA by Orchid Hotels has launched properties in cities such as Mumbai, Nashik, and Noida, totaling 500-700 rooms by late 2024.[20] The organized mid-segment includes approximately 40,000-50,000 branded rooms within India’s 160,000-170,000 total branded hotel inventory as of 2025.[21] Lemon Tree reported an 18% revenue CAGR over the past five years, reflecting steady growth.[22] Ginger’s revenue is projected to grow at a 23% CAGR through 2027, per industry forecasts.[19] IRA emphasizes culinary offerings and strategic locations, such as its 68-room Noida property.[20] Unorganized hotels still account for a significant portion of the mid-segment market.[21] These brands operate within a competitive landscape shaped by increasing demand in tier-2 and tier-3 cities.[17]
