Matthias Barker (born April 27, 1993) is a psychotherapist, educator, and social media content creator, known for his work on parent-child estrangement and trauma.

Early life and education

edit

Barker was born and raised in Spokane, Washington, United States. He attended Moody Bible Institute, where he earned a bachelor's degree in pastoral counseling, and subsequently earned a master's degree in clinical mental health counseling at Northwest University. [3]

Career

edit

Barker specializes in treating high-acuity sexual trauma, complex trauma, and marital issues. [4][5] Through platforms like Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and his top-ranking Spotify podcast, he delivers psychoeducation content to a following of over 5 million people. [6][7]

Barker offers online workshops on topics including trauma, anxiety, parenting, and estrangement, while collaborating with other experts in the field of psychology. [4][8][9] He also self-published two mental health journals on motivation and gratitude with a trauma-informed approach. [3][4][5]

In 2020, he began the Matthias J Barker Podcast, which ranked as high as #38 on the Spotify global health and fitness charts. [3][5] Barker now co-hosts the Healing Trauma podcast with renowned trauma expert, and Harvard trained psychiatrist, Dr. Frank Anderson. [10]

Writings and views

edit

Barker contends that while artificial intelligence (AI) could expand access to mental health care, its adoption raises significant ethical concerns. [11] These include risks of AI therapists mishandling ethically ambiguous situations or, conversely, becoming so effective they grant corporations or individuals access to data from thousands of personal counselling sessions. [12] Such data could be misused to manipulate vulnerable individuals:[12]

What if it could be used to bend the mental health of vulnerable people in the direction of certain beliefs or agendas? If you could convince the masses of anything, would you trust yourself to hold such a power? I certainly would not.[12]

Personal Life

edit

Barker resides in Nashville, Tennessee, with his three children, and wife. [6]
