Khai Hadid Malik (born September 19, 2020) is the daughter of American fashion model Gigi Hadid. She is the granddaughter of former model and television personality Yolanda Hadid and real estate developer Mohamed Hadid on her mother's side, and Trisha Malik and Yaser Malik on her father's side.[1] Her extended family includes her aunt, supermodel Bella Hadid, and her uncle, model and media personality Anwar Hadid.[1]
Early life and family
editKhai Hadid Malik was born on September 19, 2020, at her mother's family farm in New Hope, Pennsylvania. She is the first child of supermodel Gigi Hadid and English singer Zayn Malik.[2] Her parents, who have had an on-again, off-again relationship since 2015,[3] have confirmed their pregnancy in April 2020.[4] Following her birth, her family has spent a significant amount of time on the farm in Pennsylvania, away from the limelight. Her parents are highly protective of her privacy, making a conscious decision to not show her face publicly and on social media to shield her from scrutiny.[5] Her parents ended their relationship in October 2021 after reports of an altercation between her father, Zayn Malik and her grandmother, Yolanda Hadid.
In late 2023, her mother, Gigi Hadid, and actor Bradley Cooper began a partnership.[6] Cooper has a daughter, Lea De Seine Shayk Cooper, from his previous relationship with model Irina Shayk.[7] According to sources close to the pair, Khai Malik and Lea Cooper have spent time together and have a "sweet" and gentle bond.[8] The two families have been blending their lives with Hadid and Cooper prioritizing their respective daughters while navigating their busy careers.[9]
Public profile and privacy
editFrom birth, Khai Malik has been a subject of public and media attention due to her parents' public profiles.[10] In response, Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik have made a conscious effort to shield their daughter from the limelight. Their approach comes from the desire for her to have a "normal childhood," allowing her to live a life free from a "public image that she has not chosen".
This commitment to her privacy is most evident in her social media presence, where they have never intentionally shared a clear photo of Malik's face. In July 2021, Gigi Hadid issued a public plea to the paparazzi, the press, and fan accounts, asking them to "PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE blur her face out of the images" if and when she is caught on camera. This request was made as Khai began to show an interest in the world around her, making it harder for her parents to keep her covered in public. Hadid noted that she wanted her daughter to be able to experience the world "without the stress of the media circus that comes with parents who are public figures."[5]
