editRayitu Galbii is one of the woredas in theOromia Region of Ethiopia. Located in theeastern part of the East Bale Zone, RayituGalbii is bordered on the south by theSomali Region, on the west by Ginir, andon the north and east by Sewena; theGestro River (or Weyib River) defines thesouthwest boundary.[1] Towns in Rayitu Galbii include Dhedecha Bela Town . The geography of this woreda consists ofmountainous terrain along the northernand southern edges, while the remainder isdominated by a flat plain. High pointsinclude Mount Elwak. Perennial riversinclude the Shabelle, Weyib, and Dinikte. Asurvey of the land in this woreda showsthat 17% is arable (15% was under annualcrops), 39% pasture, 37% forest or heavyvegetation, and the remaining 7% isconsidered swampy, mountainous orotherwise unusable. Teff, corn andsorghum are important local crops.[2]However raising livestock is a moreOverview important source of food and income,which include in order of importanceshoats, camels and cattle. Rayitu is achronically food insecure woreda, andfood aid is needed an average of five to sixmonths in an average year.[3]Industry in the woreda consists of a fewsmall-scale establishments, as well assome retailers and service providers.There were 12 Farmers Associations with6,273 members and 3 Farmers ServiceCooperatives. Raytu has 52 kilometers ofdry-weather road, for an average roaddensity of 0.28 kilometers per 1000 square kilometers. About 7% of the totalpopulation has access to drinking water.[2]The 2007 national census reported a totalpopulation for this woreda of 33,169, ofwhom 16,876 were men and 16,293 werewomen; 3,204 or 9.66% of its populationwere urban dwellers. The majority of theinhabitants said they were Muslim, with98.47% of the population reporting theyobserved this belief, while 1.2% of thepopulation practised Ethiopian OrthodoxChristianity.[4]Demographics Based on figures published by the CentralStatistical Agency in 2005, this woreda hasan estimated total population of 43,222, ofwhom 20,788 were males and 22,434 werefemales; 2,409 or 5.57% of its populationare urban dwellers, which is less than theZone average of 13.5%. With an estimatedarea of 7,055.22 square kilometers, Raytuhas an estimated population density of 6.1people per square kilometer, which is lessthan the Zone average of 27.[5]The 1994 national census reported a totalpopulation for this woreda of 31,056, ofwhom 16,182 were men and 14,874women; 1,343 or 4.32% of its population were urban dwellers at the time. The twolargest ethnic groups reported in Raytuwere the Oromo (91.25%), and the Somali(8.47%); all other ethnic groups made up0.28% of the population. Oromiffa wasspoken as a first language by 89.34%, and10.35% spoke Somali; the remaining 0.31%spoke all other primary languagesreported. The majority of the inhabitantswere Muslim, with 99.56% of thepopulation reporting they practiced thatbelief.[6]Notes 1.
