edit

Priyam Archi (Bengali: প্রিয়াম অর্চি) is a Bangladeshi film, theatre, and television actress who gained recognition through her work in independent films—an arena often marginalised for its resistance to mainstream conventions. She is known for her performances in No Ground Beneath the Feet (2021), Boli (The Wrestler) (2023), and NIRvana (2024), all of which have been featured at major international festivals including Busan, Moscow, Shanghai, Eurasia, and the Malaysia International Film Festival. Her roles frequently explore complex themes such as identity, displacement, and human struggle. Priyam has built her experience as a South Asian artist through cross-cultural work across Bangladeshi, Indian, and UK-based creative industries.

Work in Bangladesh and South Asia

edit

Priyami began her screen career as actor with Komolopuran (2018), a short film that won Best Director at India’s Dadasaheb Phalke Awards.[4] She garnered wider acclaim with her performance in No Ground Beneath the Feet (Paayer Tolay Maati Nei, 2021),directed by Fazle Rabby Mridha, produced by Abu Shahed Emon portraying Mina, a woman affected by environmental change  and displacement. The film premiered at the Busan International Film Festival and was Bangladesh’s official submission to the 96th Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category. She also was been nominated for the Best Supporting Actress Award at the Malaysia International Film Festival in 2023 for the role.[1][5]

In Boli (The Wrestler) (2023), directed by Iqbal Hossain Chowdhury, Priyam played Rashu, a daughter-in-law navigating domestic tension in 1990s coastal Bangladesh. The film won the New Currents Award at Busan and was preserved by the Asian Film Archive for its linguistic and cultural significance and was Bangladesh’s official submission to the 97th Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category.

International and cross cultural Project:

In Deshlai (formerly Zewel), Priyam collaborated with Indian filmmaker Qaushiq Mukherjee (Q), a prominent figure in post-2000s South Asian cinema known for his transgressive and experimental style, marking a notable India–Bangladesh creative collaboration.[7]

Archi made her UK screen debut in The Unexpected (2024), produced by Eastern Thespians Wimbledon (ETW), a London-based theatre-to-film collective. In the segment Mirror in the Water, she portrayed a character defined by longing, ambition, and metaphysical unrest. The project reflects South Asian philosophical influences while engaging international audiences and was selected for its world premiere at the Chicago South Asian Film Festival 2025.

She continues to develop new UK-based work exploring diasporic storytelling, female subjectivity, and intercultural memory, bridging narratives between South Asia and the UK.

Artistic Style and Themes

edit

Archi’s work is characterised by emotional subtlety, linguistic specificity, and restrained intensity. She often portrays characters shaped by silence, marginalisation, and psychological tension. Her cross-border collaborations in Bangladesh, India, and the UK position her as a future leading figure in the emerging space of diasporic South Asian cinema.[2][7]
