On Wikipedia, maintaining a neutral point of view requires
- Representing positions in proportion to their representation in sources
- Describing disputes without engaging in them ourselves
These are compatible, harmonious notions, but focusing on one without regard for the other when attempting to achieve neutrality can result in editorial confusion, difficulties in establishing consensus, or even the production of original research. In particular, editors should take care when attempting to "compromise" between—or otherwise simultaneously represent—opposing positions in a dispute.
