CC BY-SA 4.0

edit

The issue with CC BY-SA 4.0 for Wikipedia is not with the copyright parts. 4.0 adds sui generis database rights, something which Europeans have but Americans don't, to the license. This would affect reusing facts from Wikipedia in some ways. (Facts themselves are not covered by copyright in the US). WMF proposed switching to 4.0 with a waiver of database rights, but Creative Commons said that was not possible. CC BY 4.0 is fine even with database rights because it doesn't have the share-alike clause for downstream use. CC BY-SA 4.0 is fine for images. The WMF would like to do this but will involve a significant amount of complicated work on the database. This is original research on my part. As far as I know there isn't a WMF explanation available to serve as a reference for this.

See mw:Help:Tabular Data for infomation on storing tabular data at Commons. Wikidata is a knowledge base that can store numerical data but retrieving it for use in tables and graphs is not working at the moment. See Template:Graph:Lines

Deletion

January 2023

  • A discussion at ANI which included how aggressively to revert uncited additions resulted in this comment on the the great debate: "delete-uncited-on-sight" versus "if-it's-probably-true-it's-disruptive-to-delete".
  • An RfA that turned into a referendum on WP:BEFORE, Prod and Draftifying

Graphs

edit

One of the graph modules has software problems that may not be fixed. See mw:Extension:Graph/Plans and its discussion page. As of 9/15/23 the plan is to migrate to Vega 5.

"The Graph extension uses the older Vega 1 & Vega 2 libraries, which had a number of security vulnerabilities. In the interest of the security of the people who use Wikipedia, the Graph extension was disabled on all Wikimedia wikis in April 2023."

This affects

Category:Pages using the Graph extension says it has 19,065 members, as does Category:Pages with disabled graphs.

Visual Editor automatically generated names of the for ":0", ":1", etc. for references used more than once. As of Feb 2023 there is a script to clean up after this problem.

Transclusion

edit
  • Putting a ':' in front of the name lets one transclude from article space. See WP:Transclusion. Example from The Big Bang Theory (noinclude tags let only the first table be transcluded): <code>{{:List of The Big Bang Theory episodes}}</code>
  • {{Excerpt}} - for reusing parts of pages in other pages, can choose not to transclude the references
