nShift is a global software company that develops cloud-based delivery and experience management solutions for e-commerce, retail, manufacturing, and logistics providers. Headquartered in Oslo and London, the company operates across Europe and globally, offering multi-carrier shipping, last mile delivery, post-purchase tracking, and returns automation through a unified platform.[1]

Formed in 2021 by merging four logistics software leaders—Unifaun, Consignor, Transsmart, and Returnado—nShift became one of the largest independent delivery management software vendors in Europe.[2] The company supports over 90,000 businesses in 190 countries and facilitates more than one billion shipments annually.

History

edit

1997

Unifaun and Consignor were both founded in 1997, entering a logistics industry where digital tools for delivery management were still limited. In the same year, Unifaun launched Pacsoft Online in collaboration with Posten AB (later renamed PostNord)[3]. This was one of the first web-based shipping management systems available in the region. The system allowed small and medium-sized enterprises to handle bookings, generate labels, and oversee deliveries through an online interface.

2010

By 2010, the platforms extended their operations into Finland. The scale of usage had grown considerably, with the systems processing more than 400 million shipments within a single year. This demonstrated the volume of traffic these platforms were managing across multiple carriers and markets.

2014

Unifaun merged with Memnon Networks, another Swedish company active in the same sector. Memnon brought established integrations with carriers and expertise in Transport Administration Systems (TAS). The same year, Unifaun expanded into Poland, moving its reach beyond the Nordic countries and establishing a presence in Central and Eastern Europe.

2016

In Finland, Posti SmartShip was launched, built on Unifaun’s platform as a national shipping solution. This was delivered in partnership with the Finnish postal service. Around the same time, Unifaun expanded into Norway. The expansion was supported by adding regional carrier integrations to its system, enabling broader coverage within the Nordic region.

2017

Unifaun released the My Parcel mobile application and Delivery Checkout. These tools added consumer-facing functionality, enabling parcel tracking and checkout options tailored to e-commerce. The move represented a shift toward features designed for end users, rather than solely for shippers and carriers.

2018

In 2018, the combined platforms reached a new milestone by processing more than half a billion parcels. The scale of throughput indicated the degree to which retailers, carriers, and other organizations were making use of the infrastructure in Europe.

2019

Unifaun acquired Transsmart, a logistics platform based in the Netherlands. Transsmart specialized in integrations with enterprise resource planning (ERP), warehouse management systems (WMS), and transport management systems (TMS). This addition increased the depth of connectivity between shipping processes and enterprise IT systems.

2020

Vitruvian Partners sold Unifaun to Marlin Equity Partners. The sale marked the divestment of the Scandinavian software company roughly four years after Vitruvian had acquired a majority stake from Bridgepoint. Goldman Sachs International served as financial adviser to Vitruvian and Unifaun on the deal while UBS Investment Bank did likewise for Marlin Equity Partners. The company was reportedly valued at around €200 million, based on an estimated €15 million EBITDA, and other potential bidders had included EQT, Axcel, FSN Capital, and Hg.[4]

2021 (February)

Unifaun and Consignor completed a merger. The combination brought together Unifaun’s delivery management platform and Consignor’s international reach, resulting in a broader network of carrier integrations and enterprise-level solutions.

2021 (August)

The company acquired Returnado, a Stockholm-based provider of returns management technology. Returnado’s platform was added to the group’s offering, expanding functionality into the returns segment of the logistics process. At the same time, the organization introduced a new consolidated identity under the name nShift.

2021 (September)

Webshipper, a Danish company, was also acquired in 2021. Webshipper specialized in e-commerce integrations with platforms such as Shopify, WooCommerce, and Amazon. This acquisition extended the company’s reach into small and medium-sized online retailers by adding plug-and-play connections to widely used e-commerce ecosystems.

nShift

The brand nShift emerged from the consolidation of Unifaun, Consignor, Memnon Networks, Transsmart, Returnado, and Webshipper. Each of these companies contributed different parts of the infrastructure: carrier integrations, enterprise connectivity, returns handling, or e-commerce tools. The result was a single platform combining these functions under one organization.

Today

The nShift platform currently processes more than 25 parcels every second. This number reflects the extent to which retailers, carriers, and consumers alike have been funneled into relying on a centralized delivery and returns management infrastructure — a system that grew not through singular innovation but through acquisitions, integrations, and the gradual absorption of alternatives.

The company’s formation was announced in August 2021, following the series of strategic mergers[5] and acquisitions.[6]

Unifaun[7] and Consignor[8], both leading providers of transport administration systems (TAS), merged under the guidance of private equity firms Marlin Equity Partners and Francisco Partners.[9]

This combined entity acquired Dutch-based Transsmart and Swedish returns platform Returnado to strengthen its multi-carrier capabilities and reverse logistics offerings. Following this, all legacy brands were retired and rebranded under the name **nShift**.

Lars Dige Pedersen served as the first CEO. He was succeeded on an interim basis by Michael Hunt, board member and Senior Operating Partner at Francisco Partners Consulting. In August 2025, Jurgen Leijdekker was appointed as CEO.[10][11]
