Modern definition

In modern-day usage, 4X games are different from other strategy games[4][1][2] such as Command & Conquer[1][5] by their greater complexity and scale,[3] and their complex use of diplomacy.[4]

Reviewers have also said that 4X games feature a range of diplomatic options,[6][7][8][9] and that they are well known for their large detailed empires and complex gameplay.[8][10] In particular, 4X games offer detailed control over an empire's economy, while other computer strategy games simplify this in favor of combat-focused gameplay.[3]
