Summary on Little Jamaica

edit

Along Eglinton Avenue lies "Little Jamaica," historically home to Caribbean immigrants.[4] The enclave comprises a main street recognized for its cultural heritage and four neighborhoods: Silverthorn, Briar Hill–Belgravia, Caledonia–Fairbank, and Oakwood–Vaughan.[5] Despite this fact, the area has undergone significant changes due to the construction of Eglinton Crosstown light-rail transit which has negatively impacted shops in the area. Since the beginning of construction, forty to forty-five percent of businesses have been forced to close, foreshadowing the the potential decline of the area.[6] Business owner of Monica's Cosmetics, Monic Lewis states, "We are not making business at all. We just come out here and sit," expressing her dismay about the future of her shop.[7] Several of her neighbors reported the same sentiments.
