George Scott (born August 29, 1929) is a retired Canadian professional wrestler, booker and promoter. From the 1950s until the 1970s, he and his younger brother Sandy competed as The Flying Scotts in North American regional promotions including the National Wrestling Alliance, particularly the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic territories, as well as successful stints in the American Wrestling Association, Maple Leaf Wrestling and Stampede Wrestling.

Scott was also the longtime head booker for the Jim Crockett Promotions working under promoter Jim Crockett, Jr. during the 1970s and with Vince McMahon during the World Wrestling Federation's national expansion during the early 1980s. He helped organize many of the early PPV events such as Wrestlemania I and II as well as the early cards for the WWF's weekly television show Saturday Night Main Event

Early life and career

Scott was born in Dalmeny, Scotland while his parents were visiting relatives and, returning to Canada, was raised in Hamilton, Ontario with his siblings Sandy, Walter and Geannie. Involved in hockey, basketball and roller skating as a child, Scott began amateur wrestling at the local YMCA at age 12 and, during the next year, also started weightlifting.

Living nearby Ben and Mike Sharpe, both well known professional wrestlers in Hamilton at the time, he also faced Martin Hutzler in an amateur bout at the YMCA. Making his professional debut in Wasaga Beach at age 17, he was helped in his early career by Pat Murphy and Dano Macdonald. During the late 1940s, Scott attempted to convince promoter Joe Maiche to wrestle in the Brantford armories before being signed by Toledo promoter Jack Pfefer and promoted as an up and coming wrestler. As Benny Becker, would gain considerable experience from many veteran wrestlers in the territory and would later face "Nature Boy" Buddy Rogers and Gorgeous George several times in his early career.

National Wrestling Alliance

After a brief stint in Georgia and North Carolina, Scott eventually found his way back to Canada where he wrestled for promoter John Katan in Toronto and made his debut in Maple Leaf Gardens in November 1950. While there, he and Whipper Billy Watson had an altercation in which he appeared with Watson on the undercard facing Lee Henning. The following day, a local newspaper wrote how Scott's match stole the show and Scott began appearing in the opening matches for much of his time in the promotion thereafter.

In 1952, following a match against Buddy Rogers in Florida, Scott collapsed in the bathroom of his apartment. He was eventually found by a friend who, noticing the bathroom light on, broke into the apartment when Scott failed to respond to his knocking on the door. Brought to a local hospital, Scott was told he had passed out due to a deep bruise in his hip and was eventually flown back to Toronto where he was diagnosed with three ruptured discs in his back caused when Rogers had kicked him in the back during their match.

Although doctors recommended surgery, Scott refused when he was told he would be unable to wrestle again. Taking a year off to recuperate, he lived with his parents while John Katan, Jack Laskin and Jack Tunney held stags and fundraising events to help his family as Scott remained paralyzed for six months.

Worried that he might suffer another more serious injury, his parents had tried to encourage him to retire and his mother suggesting a career in law enforcement. Although he began working as a bouncer for a time and was offered a managerial position at the bar he worked for, he declined and eventually returned to active competition in Stu Hart's Stampede Wrestling in 1954.

The Flying Scotts

Helping his brother Angus break into the wrestling business in 1953, Scott began teaming with his brother in Stampede Wrestling shortly after his recovery later winning the NWA Canadian Tag Team Championship in 1954. After a brief stint in Maple Leaf Gardens in 1955, The Flying Scotts as they were known became one of the top tag teams in the Toronto and Buffalo areas during the late 1950s. Defeating Chris & John Tolos for the Stampede International Tag Team Championship in 1958, they would feud with Butcher and Mad Dog Vachon the following year.

Scott would also return to the Carolinas with his brother during the 1960s before eventually regained the Stampede International Tag Team Championship in 1963. They would also win the AWA World Tag Team Championship in Indiana and, while in Australia during the late 1960s, won the IWA World Tag Team Championship three times between 1966 and 1968. [1]

While in Stu Hart's Stampede Wrestling in 1954, he and Angus would become one of the most popular tag teams in Western Canada during their six-year stay in the promotion. At one event, in which they were featured in the main event against The Miller Brothers (Bill & Ed Miller), promoters were forced to turn away 6,000 at a Stampede Wrestling event before splitting up. The two would eventually have a falling out after the death of their mother resulting in Angus refusing to attend her funeral.

Stampede Wrestling

Remaining in Calgary, Scott had a successful singles career while with Stampede Wrestling during the 1950s and 60s. When Billy Watson appeared in the area in the late 1960s, he refused to defend his title against Scott as well as Luther Lindsay and George Gordienko. According to Scott, this was the result of their argument in Toronto years before.

While wrestling Killer Kowalski during a match in Calgary, fans reportedly began chanting "We want Scott". The following night at an event in Edmonton, Watson asked Scott to team with him in Toronto to which Scott declined. Scott has stated in later interviews that he regretted that decision as the wrestler who eventually teamed with Watson, Billy Red Lyons whose career would take off after that match.

Involved in booking for Stu Hart and Jim Crockett, Sr. during the early 1970s, he declined offers to tour Japan and instead chose to continue wrestling for both Stampede Wrestling and the Mid-Atlantic territory. He teamed with El Mongol and Jimmy Dancing Bear in 6-man tag team matches against Buddy Colt and The Assassins in late 1971 and, the following year, he lost to Superstar Billy Graham in Chicago, Illinois on November 3, 1972 [2] Suffering a neck injury while wrestling in Texas, he was forced to retire the following year [3] reuniting with his brother Angus against Atlantic Coast Tag Team Champions Gene & Ole Anderson in Winston-Salem, North Carolina on May 26, 1973 retiring later that year. Jim Crockett Promotions and the Mid-Atlantic territory

In the years following his retirement, George gained a reputation as one of the leading bookers in the industry. Brought in by John Ringly, who had recently taken over Jim Crockett Promotions after the death of his father-in-law Jim Crockett, Sr., and stayed on after David and Jim Crockett, Jr. assumed control of the promotion.

During his first few years in the Carolinas, he made major changes in the promotion including changing its focus from traditional tag team wrestling to singles competitors by bringing Wahoo McDaniel, The Super Destroyer and Johnny Valentine, with Valentine being the top wrestler in the territory. Although fans were was slow to respond to the sudden shift, Valentine had become one of the most popular wrestlers in the region within several months. He also signed younger wrestlers such as "Superfly" Jimmy Snuka, Roddy Piper, Rick "The Dragon" Steamboat and "Nature Boy" Ric Flair, and became a major influence during their early careers.

During the late-1970s, Scott became a partner with Jim Crockett buying a third of Toronto promoter Frank Tunney's promotion for $100,000. This allowed them access to southern Ontario and parts of the northeastern United States as well as bringing in wrestlers from Maple Leaf Wrestling and the Carolinas. This would continue for several years until Frank Tunney's death in 1983 and his son Jack Tunney sided with the World Wrestling Federation when they entered the area during the mid 1980s; Scott later sued Jack Tunney and eventually recieved a $500,000 settlement and $150,000 in legal expences in 1992.

In 1981, Scott chose to leave Jim Crockett Promotions due to a pay dispute and resigned his position after giving Jim Crockett six weeks notice. Although Jim Crockett attempted to take Scott to court, the matter was soon dropped. Receiving numerous offers from promoters across the country, Scott took several months off before agreeing to temporarily assist Atlanta promoter Jim Barnett and Georgia Championship Wrestling for two months.

Although approached by Eddie Einhorn to become a partner in his International Wrestling Association, offering him a $250,000 salary and a percentage of the promotion although he eventually declined. During this time, he also looking into purchasing the rights for the NWA's Oklahoma territory although he walked away from the deal allowing Bill Watts to purchase the territory for his Universal Wrestling Federation promotion. World Wrestling Federation

In 1983, Scott received a call from Vince McMahon, Sr. with whom he had a close working relationship while with Jim Crockett Promotions. Agreeing to assist his son Vince McMahon who had recently taken over the World Wide Wrestling Federation, he was immediately sent to Atlanta to oversee the WWF's purchase of the Saturday night timeslot on TBS, forcing out Georgia Championship Wrestling and resulting what became known as "Black Saturday". He was later involved in negotiations with Keith Hart for the McMahon's buyout of Stampede Wrestling which, according to Stu Hart in his biography Stu Hart: Lord of the Ring, was concluded by a handshake agreement. The official sale was finalized by Jim Barnett on August 24, 1984 for $1,000,000 to be paid off $100,000 a year. [6]

While in the area, he began running events in Miami, Florida which soon became very profitable for the company and he soon began booking for the entire promotion. Between 1984-1985, the WWF was grossing grossing between $3-4 million on weekends. He was directly involved in planning some of the biggest events in the promotion's history including WrestleMania I and II, the first televised shows for Saturday Night's Main Event and the supercard Big Event at Toronto's Exhibition Stadium. Scott appeared off-camera at WrestleMania when, during the main event between Hulk Hogan & Mr. T and "Rowdy" Roddy Piper and Paul Orndorff, he pulled guest official Muhammad Ali out of the ring as he was supposed to be an outside-the-ring referee.

Prior to WrestleMania, he took part in the initial negotiations with Mr. T to appear in the main event. Despite an argument between he and Mr. T, the disagreement was eventually settled and he agreed to appear; Mr. T later ran up $22,000 in expenses during the week leading up to WrestleMania.

Scott was also one of the key officials who attempted to clean up the widespread drug use among wrestlers in the promotion. He was involved in setting up the WWF's initial drug testing program. Those who failed the drug test would be suspended for six weeks and, if caught a second time, would be released from the company. Although having control of most of the roster, he and then WWF World Heavyweight Champion Hulk Hogan became involved in a heated argument during an event at Madison Square Garden regarding "some unsavory characters" hanging around backstage. Hogan, who by this time was gaining some political clout, went over Scott's head complaining about the incident to promoter Vince McMahon.

He worked three days straight with NBC producer Dick Ebersol on the first episode of Saturday Night's Main Event. He and Ebersol disagreed on the show's content, with Ebersol in favor of a Saturday Night Live-style show as opposed to Scott's ideas for a traditional wrestling event. The format had been previously used on the WWF's Tuesday Night Titans. Eventually, Scott decided to resign due to overwork, the changing direction of the company and ongoing conflicts with Hogan and other wrestlers. [7]

Later career and retirement

After leaving the WWF in 1986, he briefly worked for Fritz Von Erich in Dallas replacing Dutch Mantel who had left the promotion earlier that year. Although David Meltzer's Wrestling Observer newsletter reported that he had joined the promotion in August, other sources such as David Manning's Heroes of World Class have claimed he had joined the promotion shortly before Kerry Von Erich's motorcycle accident the previous month.

Scott's time in WCCW was brief however and, according to Gary Hart, he resigned his position after failing to force Hart out of the promotion. [8] Scott, who reportedly regarded Hart as a threat to his position, had scheduled a match between Abdullah the Butcher and Bruiser Brody at the supercard Christmas Star Wars '86 later that year. However, he secretly withheld from the participants that the match, in which Abdullah the Butcher would loose to Brody, would be a looser-leaves-Texas match. Brody would eventually find out about the arrangement and instead agreed to lose to Abdullah causing him to leave the promotion. Brody would return to WCCW as the masked wrestler Red River Jack and, with Scott leaving the promotion shortly after, Brody replaced him as head booker. [9]

He later went back to work for Crockett in 1988, taking over creative rights of the promotion but lightning didn't strike twice and his run was brief as he was replaced by the NWA booking committee after a few months. [10] He started up a promotion in the Carolinas called South Atlantic Pro Wrestling in the early 1990s. It got off to a promising start but shut down in 1994.

Recent years

Retiring to Indian Rocks Beach, Florida with his wife Jean, a former City Commissioner who has long been active in local politics. Scott also became involved in real estate and rental properties, [11] as well as his involvement in numerous charitable events, specifically his assistance in establishing the Eblen Foundation in Asheville, North Carolina, which helps underprivileged families. [12]

Religion

West Bengal Pride itself as one of the most secular states in India. People of all faiths, viz., Hinduism, Islam and Christianity, have resided here for centuries and identify themselves as 'Bengali' first. Though, Hinduism is the faith of the majority, people of other faiths have lived in the state, with almost absolute security, equal opportunity and freedom to practice their faith. The ill effects of Hindu Caste system are also far less visible in the state and, people of all castes are treated with respect and dignity here.

Hinduism

Hindu saints of West Bengal come from all castes. For example, Sant Binu (Tantrik), Sant Purnananda[64] and Sant Prasanna were Harijans, Sant Jalandhara, Ramananda Raya, Rani Rasmoni were Shudras, Swami Vivekananda was a Vaish, and Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was a Brahmin.

In modern times, Sri Aurobindo, Yukteswar Giri, Swami Vivekananda, Ramakrishna, Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, Sri Anandamoyi Ma were worldwide renowned Hindu saints.

There are several Bengali-speaking saints that were not born in West Bengal. For example, Sant Chinmoy, although born in present-day Bangladesh, has been adored by all Bengali Hindus as a spiritual expert, which gained membership worldwide. Swarupananda was also born in present-day Bangladesh Paramahansa Yogananda was a practitioner of the Kriya Yoga. Shree Maa was great devotee born in Assam, who inspired poet Rabindranath Tagore in his writings.

Other saints known to Hindus more locally within India are Baba Lokenath Brahmachari of Raja Yoga (believed by some to be an avatar of Shiva), Lahiri Mahasaya of Kriya Yoga, Sri Sarada Devi of Ramakrishna's ideals, Bama Khyapa of Shakti worship.

The most popular form of God in West Bengal is Durga Maa. Krishna is also worshiped by many Gaudiya Vaishnavas.

Dartanion Thomas Sutton is the great-grand nephew of the late Katherine Hilton, of the Hilton Hotel dynasty. Born on June 17, 1977 in Lafayette, Indiana to Theresa and Thomas Sutton, He is a life-long member of Alpha Theta Kappa Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa. Dartanion has been a member on the advisory board of the National Association of Industrial Technology since January 2007. He is also a two time graduate of Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana, (2007 & 2008). He is currently attending Indiana State University and engineering/designing a way for cleaner and cheaper energy. Dartanion lives in Lafayette, Indiana with his wife, Summerlyn, and his eight children: Brandy, 17, Sasha,(1991-1991), William, 11, Emily,9, "Farron" James,(2000-2006), Tristan,13, Brandalyn,11, and Lillie Rose, 6.

The Pennsylvania West Youth Soccer Association, or commonly called PAWEST, is the official youth soccer organization of western Pennsylvania. It is operated out of Monroeville, PA. PAWEST conducts annual championships for each of its two leagues. The Classic Division plays annually for the State Cup. The lesser league is commonly known as "travel." This league is then split up into divisions 1, 2, and, 3 for males and divisions A, B, and, C for females. The travel league plays annualy for the PAWEST Open Cup at Edinboro University in Edinboro, PA.

Z-space, or Zero-Space, is a fictional technological apparatus from K.A. Applegate's popular children's book series Animorphs. It is the non-dimension through which faster-than light travel and communication is possible. A person in zero-space will see white, as opposed to the black of normal space. See also the Star Trek concept of warp.

Connection with morphing

When one morphs a being smaller than themselves, the extra mass (excess skin, bones etc.) is extruded into Z-space. In the rare event that a ship would pass by, they would be drawn into it and likely vaporized or disentegrated by the ship's forcefield. According to a recently documented occurrence, the being's consciousness is pulled back to the mass in Z-space, rather than staying with the morphed body as usual. It used to be thought that the mass would be disorganized, random blobs, but it is now known, or at least conjectured, that the mass is in fact fully formed and proportioned. Should the mass survive somehow, it is subject to a 'snap-back' effect, causing the consciousness to return to the original body, with no time passing whatsoever.

Paolo Frangipane is an Argentine football player , born in Buenos Aires, Argentina on July 11 of 1979 who currently plays for the Colombian side, Deportivo Cali. [[Image:]] THE 1835 PENSION ROLL - Was an Act of US Congress that was one of a series of acts designed to give aid to wounded veterans of war, particularly the American Revolutionary War. It was the first type of social security and disability for veterans and older persons. The Pension rolls are found at most American Public Libraries. They are today on microfilm or microfish. They are listed alphabetically. The pension rolls have a call number often used by organizations such as DAR or SAR to confirm that a ancestor was a true American Patriot or Veteran of the War. For a person to have qualified under this act, or those previous acts, the person often had to testify at a Federal Court or Hearing, in which a judge would determine if the person qualifies and should be awarded benefits.

THE RT. HON. LORD CHARLES GREVILE MONTAGU (1741-1783) The last Royal Governor of South Carolina Colony. Charles was the second son of His Grace, Robert Montagu, 3rd Duke of Manchester. Charles attended Oxford in 1759 and married Ms. Elizabeth Balmer in 1765. Charles was Royal Governor of South Carolina from 1766 to 1773.

The British Stamp Act made him unfavorable with the local colonials, and led to his demise and disgrace during the American Revolution. He tried to be favorable with the colonials and American rebels, having pardoned some of the Regulators. However, it was not enough. Charles and American General Moutrie both exchanged words. Charles was captured in New York but was released by General Nathan Greene. It was said that Charles was in Duke of Cumberland's army regiment, but the outfit was discharged in 1783.

Charles made it to Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada with his family and company. He died soon afterwards and is buried there. He is buried at St Paul's Church in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. His tomb states that he died in 3 Feb, 1784, still in his 40s. He was remembered as a good and braveman, who was loyal to his King and Country. Ironically, the current Duke of Manchester lives in America - California and not South Carolina.

Daniel Elfrith (fl. 1607-1641) was a 17th century English privateer, colonist and slave trader. In the service of the Earl of Warwick, Elfrith was involved in privateering expeditions against the Spanish from his base in Bermuda. He was particularly known for capturing Spanish slave ships bound for the Spanish Main and selling the slaves himself to rival colonies in the Caribbean and the American colonies.

He and John Jupe were the first men to arrive in the Colony of Virginia to sell slaves. Arriving only four days ahead his partner, Jupe had sold the first African slaves in the American colonies in exchange for provisions, however Elfrith's arrival sparked considerably more controversy and was turned away by the colony.

He is also one of the earliest Englishmen, along with Sussex Camock, to discover and later take part in the initial settlement of Providence Island in 1629. A personal friend of the Earl of Warwick, his son-in-law Philip Bell became the island's first governor while he assumed the position of its admiral. [1]

Biography

An active privateer in the West Indies as early as 1607, Elfrith commanded the Treasurer owned by Earl of Warwick for several years. In mid-1613, Elfrith arrived in Bermuda with a Spanish caravel full of grain for the starving island colonists. As England and Spain were not at war, this was technically considered an act of piracy although this fact went unnoticed by the colony. However, the ship also contained black rats which escaped from the ship as the grain was being unloaded in a harbor off St. George's. They quickly bred and were soon nesting in palm trees as well as the thatched roofs of cottages, churches and storehouses. The rats dug holes in the soft coral, feeding on corn and wheat in storehouses and eating the crops and other plants grown by the colony. Despite the colonists attempts to exterminate them, which included using traps, hunting dogs and setting cats into the wild, the rats plagued the colony for several years before the problem was finally brought under control. In early 1618, Elfrith was hired by Sir Robert Rich, Lord de la Warr and others to captain the Treasurer for a privateering expedition to the West Indies. His employers managed to obtain a privateering commission from Charles Emmanuel I through his ambassador to England, Count Scarnafissi. He left England in late April or early May and arrived at the Colony of Virginia shortly after the Neptune under Captain Henry Spelman. Their arrival was said to have "brought a most pestilent disease (called the bloody flux) which infected almost all the whole colony. That disease, notwithstanding all our former afflictions, was never known before amongst us". Five years later, a lawsuit was brought before the court of admiralty in which the Earl of Warwick was accused by Edward Brewster and other colonists of outfitting the Neptune and the Treasurer with arms and ammunition instead of the badly needed provisions and supplies, such as fishing tackle, that they were promised. In mid-July 1619, he and John Jupe of the White Lion captured the Portuguese slaver Sao Joao Bautista carrying around 370 Angolans taken prisoner during Portugal's war in Luanda. The two privateers intercepted the ship as it sailed towards Vera Cruz and escaped with at least 200 slaves, Elfrith taking the majority of them as his ship was larger while Jupe took less then 30 men and women. They both headed towards the Colony of Virginia, a known safe haven for English privateers under Governor Samuel Argall, with Jupe reaching the colony four days ahead of Elfrith and successfully selling his cargo of slaves. Elfrith's arrival was far less welcoming, learning that Charles Emmanuel I had made peace with Spain (thus invalidating his privateering commission) and that Governor Argall had been replaced by Edwyn Sandys (a rival of the Earl of Warwick), and left the colony almost as soon as he arrived. He instead returned to Bermuda where the slaves were put to work on the estate of his employer the Earl of Warwick. [4]

However, he did return to Virginia periodically while on privateering voyages against the Spanish during the next year. Acting under orders from Governor Argall, who may have misrepresented the Earl of Warwick to justify his activities, he continued raiding Spanish shipping. Nathaniel Butler, governor of Bermuda and protege of the Earl of Warwick, wrote to the Earl reporting that Elfrith's vessel was "in an unseaworthy condition and with her a number of negros" when he arrived in the island later that year. He further stated that

While on a privateering expedition with Captain Sussex Camock of the bark Somer Ilands in 1625, Elfrith and Camock discovered two islands off the coast of Nicaragua, both separated 50 miles apart from each other. Camock stayed with 30 of his men to explore one of the islands, San Andreas, while Elfrith took the Warwicke back to Bermuda bringing news of Providence Island. Governor Bell wrote on behalf of Elfrith to Sir Nathaniel Rich, a businessman and cousin of the Earl of Warwick, who presented a proposal for colonizing the island noting its strategic ___location "lying in the heart of the Indies & the mouth of the Spaniards". Although this also meant the island would be subject to Spanish attacks, Bell assured Rich that the island would become invincible once fortified and make a highly valued base for privateers. Bell also pointed out that San Andreas, lower and more favorable for farming, could never be made "half so strong".

Elfrith was appointed admiral of the colony's military forces in 1631, and Black Rock Fort the following year, remaining the overall military commander for over seven years. During this time, Elfrith served as a guide to other privateers and sea captains arriving in the Caribbean. As early as 1631, he warned of places where English ships might be attacked by natives or escaped slaves including the areas of Dominica and Trujilo. [5]

That same year, he left on an unauthorized expedition to Central America where attacked and captured a Spanish frigate in Cape Gracias a Dios although he was forced to leave behind a pinnace behind before he returning to Providence Island. This attack was considered an act of piracy as he did not have a letter of marque from the Providence Island Company. The incident was also condemned by the colonists, concerned that the colony might be seen as a base for privateering, and wrote to friends and family in England believing Elfrith's reckless behavior was endangering the colony. Elfrith's raid not only revealed the colony's presence to the Spaniards but left the colony open to attack before adequate fortifications could be built. It is speculated that Elfrith may have tried to intentionally provoke the Spaniards to attack the colony believing the privateering commissions would be granted in order to launch a retaliate. Later that year, Elfrith entertained the Dutch privateer Diego El Mulato in the colony further angering the residents and the PIC. Although an enemy of the Spanish and a well-known officer under Piet Hein, it was thought dangerous to invite any privateer into the colony to see its defenses.

In an effort to make peace with the company, he gave them his rudders which contained an elaborate manuscript describing the coastlines and the navigation directions of the Caribbean. Considered by modern editors and cartographers as "remarkably accurate", Elfrith wrote that he had compiled this information during his exploration and privateering voyages for his own use and felt that he should make it available to English captains as many of the other "ancient seamen" who also knew these charts were now dead and that the "drafts and platts made in England were very false". Also included were details for the approaches of the Mosquito Coast and the Bay of Trujilo as well as Providence Island itself.

In 1632, he and Samuel Axe, the other principal military commander, became involved in an argument resulting in Axe leaving the colony and the PIC. A dispute between the two first arose at the first harvest of the island's first tobacco crop. The PIC had made a vague mention of Elfrith, Axe and Bell receiving a portion for their efforts in establishing the colony with Elfrith and Axe arguing over their shares. The two also disagreed of the strategic value of Warwick Fort. Axe ultimately decided to leave the colony because of this dispute.

In 1636, Elfrith resumed privateering upon receiving a letter of marque from the PIC. He was replaced by Governor Robert Hunt in April 1638, however he continued as a privateer until 1641.

Vincent Gambi (d. 1819) was a 19th century Italian pirate. He was one of the most violent and bloodthirtsy men in the Gulf of Mexico during the early 1800s and raided shipping in the Gulf of Mexico for well over a decade before his death. Gambi was one of several pirates associated with Jean Lafitte and later assisted him during the Battle of New Orleans along with Dominique You, Rene Beluche and another fellow Italian-born pirate Louis "Cut Nose" Chigizola. He is briefly mentioned in the 2007 historical novel Strangely Wonderful: Tale of Count Balashazy by Karen Mercury.

Biography

One of Lafitte's most rebellious and unruly partners, Gambi had a long criminal history that preceded him prior to his arrival in New Orleans during the early 1800s. Within several years, he had become of the major pirates active in the Gulf of Mexico and was claimed to have personally killed dozens of his victims with an ax. He was one of the first men to be approached by Jean Lafitte when he first began to organize the warring factions of the pirates of Grand Terre and the Bay of Barataria. At one of his earliest conferences, Lafitte asked his fellow pirates to sail as privateers with a letter of marque and limit their attacks only to the Spanish. Gambi openly defied him however, refusing to this request outright and left the conference. Soon after, Lafitte received news that Gambi was encouraging his own men to revolt against him. Lafitte was soon confronted by one of Gambi's officers who, challenging him with a pistol, shouted "The men of Gambi take orders only from Gambi!" Lafitte, in true fashion, drew his own pistol and shot his challenger killing him. This subsequently ended any talk of rebellion against Lafitte. [7]

Sailing with Lefitte's pirate fleet during the next years, he was later given command of the schooner Petit Milan in May 1813 and captured a Spanish schooner carrying a cargo of dry goods soon after. He took the prize to Cat Island, roughly 15 miles west of the mouth of Lafourche, with the profits being split between the Lafitte brothers and the rest of the fleet. He and the others were well-known in New Orleans and openly sold captured prizes and cargo, often English manufactured goods, to friends and acquaintances in the city.

He and the others sided with Lafitte against the British during the War of 1812 and was present with Lafitte, Dominique You, Rene Beluche and Louis "Cut Nose" Chigizola during the Battle of New Orleans. After the war, Gambi was granted American citizenship by President James Madison as were Lafitte and the others who participated in the battle. After Lafitte left Grand Terre for Texas, he settled on Cheniere Caminada building a large house and raising his family there. The house became a popular hangout for Lafitte, Dominique You, Rene Beluche and others. [8]

In 1815, he was enlisted by General Jean Robert Marie Humbert and Jose Alvarez de Toledo in their conspiracy to invade Texas. Despite the United States and Spain being at peace, they funded his piracy activities against the Spanish. In May, he captured two Spanish ships off the coast of Tampico and brought them back to Grande Isle on June 1. While both ships were carrying cocoa and dry goods, one ship was found with silver ingots. The crew and passengers of the two ships were held captive in what was described by one of the captives as a "most cruel situation" for four weeks before sending them back in one of the prizes.

Spanish agents in New Orleans eventually become aware of the intentions of Humbert and Toledo however, especially after Humbert publicly stated his grand plans in a newspaper article, and both Toledo and Gambi were both arrested by Commodore Daniel Patterson for piracy. Neither of the men were convicted, however. [9]

He was one of the hundred or so Baratarians who followed Lafitte after receiving his pardon from President James Madison. He was going to be given command of the Victoria, however he left almost immediately after due to a falling out between he and the Lafittes when Pierre Lafitte sued in him a civil suit over a $250 loan on July 2, 1817. During the next four years, he engaged in outright piracy continuing to loot and sink a number of ships before he himself was apparently killed by his own men who found him asleep on a pile of gold. [7] Catching up to Gambi once more, his schooner was captured in December 1819 by Daniel Patterson in what is thought to have been the last pirate ship active in the western Gulf of Mexico. Patterson learned from the crew that they had killed Gambi after learning that he had kept several thousand dollars owed to them they had taken from their latest victim. As he slept on deck during the night, as his head rested on a spar, one of his men decapitated him using "the very bloody ax which he so often used" according to news reports published around 1819, including a colorful story by the Opelousas Courier. Bambee is a feature on Newgrounds that spoofs the film Bambi. It follows the orignal story with the animals going to see the young prince.When they arrive,however,the mother is grunting in pain.When Bambee comes out of her rear she sceams,and the animals are disgusted at the new "prince".One of them gags,and then they all run away.(Friend Owl says "That's life").Then we see Bambee and Thumper walking togeter.Thumper points to an airplane and says "Hey,look,Bambee,it's a bird!"This becomes Bambee's one and only word. Then winter comes...and spring again.Bambee and his mother are at the meadow as she is telling him about it.She steps out and is cheaking when many rifles come out and shot her.(Friend Owl says "That's death").Then Bambee is a stag.Father comes and tells him that the forrest is on fire.Bambee trips,and father tells him to get up.He then flies in the air(taking father with him) and father says he didn't know that Bambee could fly.Then back in the forrest,a Leprechaun gives birth to a unicorn!The animals sceam as it(the unicorn)turns into an angry deer with a riffle.Friend Owl says,"Boy,I guss that's,ya know,the end".The the deer shoots the owl and the short ends.
