Merge with Multiple deprivation index. (I don't have strong feelings for which name to keep.) This is a legitimate area of study, see e.g. OECD, Journal of Social Science and Medicine, Journal of Health Affairs, Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, Journal of Environment and Planning (again), etc. While the most prominent use is in the UK, many of these articles indicate more limited usage elsewhere, and the current MDI article's lede is probably incorrect - these two articles describe the same fundamental topic.
