I nominate this for deletion because it is a screenshot of proprietary software, Mac OS and Windows 7, and Commons images from Category:VirtualBox can serve as a free equivalent because they use free operating systems and the base software is also free software, so the nominated file fails WP:NFCC#1. User:Jasper Deng has stated: "Even when using Linux distributions to demonstrate it, this software still contains copyrighted code (especially the extensions pack) and thus no free image can be made of it, unless we use a very old version of VirtualBox that does not accurately reflect the software itself." I don't consider this an argument for keeping the image, yet. Instead, if true, it would mean that all VirtualBox screenshots on the Commons should be nominated for deletion. If all that happened and no free image could exist, the argument "virtualization of Windows on Mac OS is the bigger usage" may be worthwhile but I'm not convinced and until then we should use the equivalent that appears to be free. The dispute is about image content, not resolution. I added the newly uploaded image to this discussion so we get a resolution on the issue at hand. I think the image should be deleted regardless of resolution, because old VirtualBox version screenshots exists and can be used. Hekerui (talk) 09:12, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
* The use of this image depends not only on the resolution but also on whether it is replaceable. The resizing of the image adjusted its resolution so that it fulfills the criterion on low resolution, but there is still the issue on whether it is replaceable or not. Different Linux distributions can still be incomatible and VirtualBox can show usage of both - and, most importantly, it can be done with free operating systems. Furthermore, Linux is not the only free operating system. A few days ago, I created File:FreeDOS on QEMU on Linux.png (WARNING! Wrong virtualisation software – not usable here) because a screenshot showing that combination was needed elsewhere.   • This raises another problem. given wikipedia's efforts toward 'user readability', does two linux operating systems have any relavance to the standard user? does it not suit the purpose better to demonstrate the two leading operating systems (in terms of market share) in this context? Please see Wikipedia NFCC #8 - 'Contextual significance. Non-free content is used only if its presence would significantly increase readers' understanding of the topic, and its omission would be detrimental to that understanding'.     • The purpose of this piece of software is to be able to run some operating system on top of some (usually different) operating system.       • For a CLI-based OS, that would not work as a guest because we need to distinguish from a simple DOS emulator. I've only sporadically ever seen VirtualBox used on a CLI environment (because not many people with that kind of host use VirtualBox). I think NotinREALITY's comment is valid, therefore, because the average user expects VirtualBox to be used to run Windows/Linux on top of OS X/Linux/Windows (except Linux on Linux or Windows on Windows, unless the Windows versions are different).Jasper Deng (talk) 22:56, 2 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
        • For whatever it is worth, Commons:Category:VirtualBox has plenty of useful screenshots. If you want an example of a screenshot where the host OS is different from the guest OS, I have created the file File:FreeDOS on VirtualBox on Linux.png for this purpose (easy since I still had the installation files). I'm not sure what the difference is between VirtualBox and a "simple DOS emulator"; DOS programs send signals directly to system hardware, so a "simple DOS emulator" must emulate all hardware, i.e., a "simple DOS emulator" must implement the features of VirtualBox, although it could be limited to handling operating systems running on ancient hardware. Programs such as DOSBox can be used as a virtualisation program, although only ancient OSes might work. --Stefan2 (talk) 23:47, 2 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

                • Virtualbox doesn't emulate anything. The difference between emulation and virtualization is massive. Virtualbox passes hardware calls to the physical hardware, not to emulated hardware, here lies the difference. and as I said before, in the context of virtualbox, most people would find a mac/windows screenshot of more value than a linux/linux one, proven by the fact that not even my lecturer understood the linux/linux one.   • Delete. This image fails to comply with WP:NFCC clauses 1, 3 and 8: First, it can be replaced by any of the many free image in commons:Category:VirtualBox. (Clause 1.) Second, although text alone can convey Aero support in VirtualBox, (Clause 8) another image in this very same article is already showing Aero support. (Clauses 8 and 3.) Third, this image is showing redundant copyright-protected assets of others (such as Steam or Microsoft Office icons) that can by no means be excused. Please take note that it is possible to show Windows Aero support in a free image by taking the screenshot of a free Windows program.   • I'm just wondering, isn't it a bit difficult to see that the left Firefox is the Debian version? Sure, you can zoom in to see the word "Iceweasel" and there are some very minor GUI differences, but they might not be very obvious. Wouldn't it be more illustrative to pick two programs where the OS differences are more prominent? Running two different versions of Firefox on the same computer concurrently works fine, for example if you use the -no-remote and -P flags to the Firefox executable. I don't think that Windows menus and contents are de minimis because it seems to be an important aspect of the image that it is Windows. --Stefan2 (talk) 10:06, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
