Request
G'day, I have an image (of a clipping from a book) which shows a simple symbol which was used as a vehicle identification symbol by the subject division. The article is currently FA, but lacks an infobox image, and I'd like to rectify that. Could I email the clipping to an editor willing to take on the job? It is basically a black outline of an arrow on a white background pointing up with single arrowheads pointing left and right branching out of the main arrow. The symbol itself is a simple line drawing and not copyrightable. Thanks in advance. Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 09:10, 30 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Can someone please create an SVG file for the flag of the town of Brandon, Suffolk (adopted in 2016), as seen here, here and here? Thanks. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 00:52, 3 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Discussion

This should be dropped: It is not a town flag. I enquired of Brandon Town Council and they replied "Thank you for your message. It made a very interesting read. However, our badge is the logo for Brandon Town Council and not Brandon." Hogweard (talk) 12:04, 6 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Hogweard: Thanks for your input, and sorry for the inconvenience. But in that case, how would you feel about it instead being uploaded under the filename "Flag of Brandon Town Council, Suffolk", and displayed on any relevant articles as such? Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 12:29, 6 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I am sticking with actual town and village flags. If it is specifically not a flag of the town, it would be misleading to display it as if it were. Maybe one day they will turn it into a town flag, and get it on the UK Flag Register, but at the moment it is not. If it is a logo of the Town Council's logo will be copyrighted in any case. Hogweard (talk) 10:03, 7 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Hogweard: I wasn't proposing to display it as the town flag in my last reply. I'm not sure how you got that idea. I specifically mentioned displaying it as a town council flag in my last reply. I had no intention of "misleading" anyone. From what I can see, there is already relevant space on most of the above articles for flags that represent local councils, rather than the areas themselves. And a lot of those same council flags seem to be on WC without any CR issues. Thoughts? Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 12:30, 7 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

It's conventional to have east on the left etc for star charts e.g. File:Field_Book_of_the_Stars-117-Constellations_of_Winter.svg. A better solution is to put a note in the caption to remind the reader. cmɢʟeeτaʟκ 17:28, 22 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Royal flags of Canada

I think that in the absence of clear evidence that the ratio of the flag should be close to 5:8, the flag should follow the past ratio of 1:2.

The illustration on the Canadian Heraldic Authority's Public Register of Arms, Flags and Badges of Canada is 5:3:
Hogweard (talk) 20:29, 29 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
However, I checked and found that all the illustrations above are drawn in the same proportion (including the Queen's flag in the past), but from past situations, it seems that different proportions are used in actual use. The same is true for the Governor's flag shown on other pages. The two pictures I mentioned are indeed inconsistent with the proportions of other existing flags.
That’s why I hope the ratio of these two pictures can be consistent with the ratio of other pictures. Most of the pictures I have seen in the past are 1:2. 112.105.122.226 (talk) 08:58, 30 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Is there any mileage in asking the Governor-General's office what are the actual proportions of the cloth flag which His Majesty actually uses? And for a good photograph / graphic? I believe the GG is rather busy at the moment, but maybe after the current flapdoodle has calmed down... Hogweard (talk) 06:44, 1 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
What I mean is that the proportions of the flags shown on the webpage may not be the same as the proportions of the flags actually used. 220.138.86.130 (talk) 12:02, 1 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That's what I thought you meant, and you are quite right. What we need to find out then is what are the proportions of the flags actually used. I understand that Her Late Majesty used a flag in the same proportions as the national flag, which is to say 2:1, but the illustration provided by the Canadian Heraldic Authority is 5:3. The old Guidance from the College of Arms was that sea flags should be 2:1 and land flags 5:3 but I have not seen that stuck to: the Union Jack and the Flag of Canada are always 2:1 on land and sea, and I think the Royal Standard that flies from Buckingham Palace is 2:1. The UK Flag Institute is dead-set on 5:3 and they have even tried to get the Union Jack changed.
When His Majesty is in Canada next month, there will be flags. They might not all be identical in proportion. Someone will be organising them, so you might want to ask the Governor General's office what shape they are. Hogweard (talk) 10:33, 4 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I recently noticed the news that King Charles III is about to visit Canada. I think it is better to wait and see the actual use. At first, I only found that the proportions of these two flags have changed, which is inconsistent with the previous flags. Moreover, when this flag was announced in 2023, it was not pointed out that its proportions have been modified compared with the flag used by the Queen in the past. 112.105.122.226 (talk) 13:48, 4 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
So after more photos of the actual use of this flag appear, we will discuss how to modify the existing svg file. 112.105.122.226 (talk) 13:51, 4 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The ratios used for the flags are indeed not completely consistent, but I see that most of the flags use a ratio of 1:2. 61.216.108.176 (talk) 08:13, 28 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I wrote to the office of the Governor General, who referred me to Heritage Canada, the body which actually has the flags made. I have just received the answer from the State Ceremonial and Protocol Directorate:
"The National Flag of Canada has a proportion of 1:2 and flags in federal displays usually all retain this proportion;
The new Sovereign’s Flag has a proportion of 3:5, to stay in line with the other personal flags of members of the Royal Family for use in Canada, both current and former;
Royal flags in Canada retain this proportion regardless of the size of the actual flag. The flags’ shape is also fixed to that of a horizontally displayed rectangle of the stated 3:5 proportion;
Heraldically speaking, there is no fixed proportion for a Banner of the Arms, as in the case of the current Sovereign’s Flag (or any flag for that matter). Nevertheless, the aforementioned proportions are adhered to for the sake of consistency."

Rhombus for sinh and cosh

Then BCAO forms a rhombus with diagonals intersecting at  . The hyperbolic cosine is defined as   so M = ( cosh t, cosh t)."

The image currently used in that article shows a half-rhombus with segments corresponding to sinh and cosh. An illustration of the suggested rhombus is requested. @Cmglee: Thank you for an excellent illustration. It has been placed in § Trigonometry of Hyperbolic coordinates. — Rgdboer (talk) 21:58, 6 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, @Rgdboer. I noticed that you changed t in the equations to u. If I understood correctly, ±t is the exponent at points A and B whereas u in the diagram is the angle MOA. As u also represents a coordinate in the first diagram in the article, should we retain t in the equations but change u in the diagram to, say, θ? cmɢʟeeτaʟκ 22:23, 6 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The change from t to u makes an agreement between the diagram and the text. Indeed, u is the angular parameter for the hyperbolic functions and it is also the parameter of the exponential function. The point is that commonly sinh and cosh are defined using the exponential function without reference to hyperbolic coordinates, and the diagram now shows how that common usage refers to geometry. — Rgdboer (talk) 22:45, 6 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for explaining. I learnt something today. cmɢʟeeτaʟκ 07:07, 7 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
